I would like to recommend this soundtrack by an up-and-coming Finnish composer named Tuomas Kantelinen.
I have just heard a suite from this score (three times in a row!) and it completely blew me away. It was released in September 2005 but I think it is the best score I have heard so far in 2006. It is most often compared to Schindler's List (both movies are set in World War II), but Mother of Mine has a beauty all its own.
Kantelinen's only link to Hollywood so far is composing the score for the film Mindhunters.
The CD is available from CDbaby and there are music samples and two reviews.
There is another review at Movie Music UK . Reluctantly, but to be fair, I must include a less than positive review from SoundtrackNet. But he is outnumbered 4 to 1.
The score for Mother of Mine is a hidden gem, and it would be great to add this new composer to the SST family. _________________ "After dark all cats are leopards." - Native American Proverb |

From Jon Broxton's review-
Quote: |
Written for a large orchestra, with strong emphasis on the string section and solo piano, much of Mother of Mine is written from a standpoint of heartfelt tragedy, emphasising the plight of the children of Finland with overwhelming beauty. In many ways, Kantelinen's approach is similar to that which Georges Delerue took on scores such as Platoon, or Dien Bien Phu, juxtaposing the heartbreak with lush cues which somehow increase the sense of sorrow inherent in the story. This is not to say that Kantelinen's score is sorrowful on the contrary, it is at times quite sweeping and uplifting. But, nevertheless, there remains a profound seriousness to the score which makes it a tremendously engaging and involving listening experience. |
That's enough for me to say yes! Thanks for the recommendation. |

Sounds like a great find, Snow.
I'm happy to see someone else found this awesome CD source located right here in little ol' Portland, Oregon. (SST's The Mars Underground is from them.) CDBaby's eclectic inventory includes some truly unusual, unfamiliar, and amazing soundtracks. Just browsing their website is an adventure. They are very personable, funny, and completely professional in their service and customer-care. |

Hi!
I also love "Mother of Mine" and just recently ordered another score by Tuomas Kantelinen from a film called "The Promise". I just found links to both "Mother of Mine" and "The Promise" on iTunes:
Mother of MIne

The Promise:

I actually discovered the Mother of Mine music during the Scandinavian Film Festival in L.A. and fell in love with this score, then was lucky enough to meet the publicist of the film and get a soundtrack CD from her!
I hope Tuomas Kantelinen will soon be scoring even bigger films as I read he has signed with one of the big score composer agencies here in the US. |

Thank you Obi, BP, Diane, Alch, phire, Twopop, Asriana, Hurr, mononoke, zirael & limey for your positive feedback and to everyone who voted.
I agree with Twopop that CDBaby is a great store to deal with. They sent me a cute email when the CD had been shipped, which I thought I would share with you:
Quote: |
Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.
A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure
it was in the best possible condition before mailing.
Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money
can buy.
We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party
marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of
Portland waved 'Bon Voyage!' to your package, on its way to you, in
our private CD Baby jet on this day, Tuesday, April 25th.
I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did.
Your picture is on our wall as 'Customer of the Year'. We're all
exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!! |
An online store with a sense of humour. I like it!
The CD arrived in 7 days, which is great service from Portland to Sydney. Faster than Amazon.
The soundtrack is now on high rotation at home. Stand-out tracks include Leaving Sweden, Remembering Home, The Message and Mother of Mine.
Thanks again everyone for your support.
