Amended 12/21/09:
Someone asked about tracks 14 & 17, pointing out that they are both available in the playlist on The Portrait Of A Lady album (Portret Damy).

Here was my response:

I was wondering how I could have missed those 2 tracks, so I listened to all of them again. Here's what I found:

The Best - Track 14 "Epilog (Portret Damy)" - (4:58) - It ends with orchestra & piano. The piano plays one last low, final note, and the orchestra playing softly, resolving in a major key.
The Portrait Of A Lady - Track 10 "Epilogue: The Portrait Of A Lady" (5:13) - Ends with orchestra (no piano) in a soaring, very emotional, very loud, minor key.

I agree that these are the same cues. JERIC has said he wants only identical tracks removed, and these are different enough that I decided to keep track 14 on Kilar: The Best.

As for The Best - Track 17 "Szepty I Lzy (Portret Damy)" (4:32) - This is a delightful vocal track with a great beat. It is not on Portrait.. album.

Trevor Rabin - American Outlaws
Great new-age western score
By: jadedtitan
Date: 26 Jan 2008
Rating:

Trevor Rabin does great action scores, and the music for American Outlaws is no different. It has that typical Western twang guitar, along with fast paced action cues that you can picture Jesse James racing away into the sun on his horse - such tracks as War is Over and The Hyperion Job.

The main theme of the score, found in the track First Kiss, but also elsewhere such as in Long Spring, Lifes a Beach and Brief Reunion, really stands out as a memorable theme. Acoustic Outlaws is a great track just for that short brief guitar solo that makes you feel as if you were standing in the American West watching the going ons of some mining town. All in all a great western score that has a nice modern touch to it.

James Newton Howard - Unbreakable
James Newton Howard's Lesser Known Masterpiece
By: ardilla_loca
Date: 22 Jan 2008
Rating:

This is, in my opinion, one of James Newton Howard's best scores, if not THE best. The music is subtle, brooding, and driven. The scoring is well orchestrated (pun intended), and the entire score combines many elements into a beautiful composition.

The thing that I enjoy personally about this score is the distinct themes that JNH has included here: You can feel what is going on in the movie without ever watching. The deep and brooding machinations of the main title "Visions" set the scene in an imperfect and hectic urban world. The themes for the Villain, Audry/Love, and the subtle yet beautiful Hero theme are masterfully woven together in the following tracks.

This score is a masterpiece, even if you did not like the film. It builds, develops, and creates images in the mind. Absolutely top notch, even for the superb work of James Newton Howard.

Hwang Sang Jun - Heaven's Soldiers
Great korean film music
By: jadedtitan
Date: 12 Jan 2008
Rating:

Found this album by chance here on SST, one of those rare jewels in the soundtrack library. An unknown movie and a relatively unknown composer make for a surprise when it comes to listening to this soundtrack. All the tracks are wonderfully composed, with beautiful strings accompany most of the major themes, but the Main Theme and Action theme are the main tracks that stand out on the album. But by no means are they the only good tracks, Starry Night, Dear Heavens Soldiers and Major Jungwoo Park are also great emotive tracks. It is easy to feel for these characters when one hears the emotion that is brought out in the music. A wonderful album that deserves to be listened to over and over again.

Ry Cooder - Long Riders, The
LIttle known western
By: jadedtitan
Date: 12 Jan 2008
Rating:

Although this is another version of the Jesse James story, the music by Ry Cooder has a great western feel to it without making you feel that you have heard it all before. The best songs on the album are the first and last tracks, The Long Riders and Jesse James. Both have that typical western sound to them, but separate themselves from other western movies. The themes are still different enough that you can listen to the music and not feel that you are hearing just another western score. The Seneca Square Dance and the Cole Younger Polka make you want to get up and square dance across the floor, fun tunes that one could easily still dance to (if western music was still cool enough to dance to)! The entire album is worth listening to, and a great cure for western music blues.

Massive Attack - Danny The Dog (Unleashed)
The two sides of Danny
By: jadedtitan
Date: 12 Jan 2008
Rating:

The music of this album matches perfectly to the themes of the movie, the harsh cruel world where Danny is treated as a dog, and the kind caring new world he finds with Sam and Victoria. The Opening Title, Atta Boy and P is for Piano show the ruff, mad and out of control side of Danny. Where as the Sam, Right Way to Hold a Spoon and Sweet is Good songs display the calmer, happier side of Danny. The music shows well the changing feelings that Danny undergoes throughout the movie. The wonderful piano mixed in, especially in the last track The Academy, pull together the emotions of the film through the music. All in all, a nice soundtrack to accompany a great movie.

Nick Glennie-Smith - Man In The Iron Mask, The
The man who wrote the story.
By: Cinder
Date: 5 Jan 2008
Rating:

I wondered why this movie was so much more about the Musketeers. Writer Alexandre Dumas also wrote stories of duels and the adventures of headstrong heroes in his books The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. On Jan. 5 in 1825 he fought his first duel at the age of 23. He lost the battle and a bit of dignity as well — his pants fell down as he stood opposite his opponent.
For me this movie was centered on the friendship of the men, not so much about the switching of the twins. All round it however was the theme good vs evil. The music is strong and supports the scenes throughout the whole movie.
This is a good way to learn a bit of history.
