Hello, SSTers. I have this little routine. There are some websites I follow for news (about the dangdest things, sometimes) that I make a point of checking in with once a month. As you know, sometimes updates come fast and furious, sometimes they slow to a crawl, and sometimes they just stop. And yet, I keep checking.

I mean, I still check out Jim Steinman's blog, even though his last post was September 8th, 2008. That's probably the longest dead space on my list, but some are close.

Does anyone else do this? And how long does a site have to go before you finally give up on it?

I guess it differs from case to case.
If a website used to update once or twice per day but suddenly stops posting for a month, it may be dead.
If a website used to update once per month, I may keep up hope for a year that it may be just a long break.

Also, some websites may change their content to something nobody is interested in. I used to frequent a machinima website since the author made hilarious machinima every few weeks, but since he doesn't do that any more but in stead posts random news about conferences he's been to and on how to be classy, I don't visit any more. His forum has also been silent for a while. I can safely state that his website is a bit dead.

Well, to quote and rephrase a famous Star Trek line, and put it on this context, I would say that:

"An website is not really dead. As long as we have access to him."

If it's a blog, you can also send a message to the owner. If there's no reply, it's dead! And if there's a reply, maybe the owner will tell you that (s)he doesn't update the website anymore Wink
