Diego Navarro: “Celebrating the Universal centennial at FIMUCITÉ is the biggest challenge of the last 6 years”

The composer and director of this unavoidable appoinment with film music places the greatest amount of premieres, sensations and novelties of the present edition at the two symphonic concerts to be held at Auditorio de Tenerife on July 13 and 14

The VI Tenerife International Film Music Festival (FIMUCITÉ), which will be held from July 7 to 14, sponsored by Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, Canary Islands Government and Santa Cruz and Arona City Councils, faces its countdown with his director's conviction, the composer Diego Navarro, that “conducting the only authorized concert of the Universal Pictures to celebrate its centennial is, possibly, the biggest artistic challenge” he has faced in the six years of the Festival.

”Undoubtedly, every concert is an extremely important challenge, but this year's is, perhaps, the one of greater magnitude”, Navarro said, referring to the Closing Gala he will conduct, performed by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra on July 14 at 21:00 at Auditorio de Tenerife “Adán Martín”. “Not only because the repertoire is very varied in styles and very complex – being the result of compiling a century of film history- he pointed out, but because, personally, I would have never thought of conducting a concert to celebrate the centennial of this great American Studios”. Navarro assures that he has assumed such responsibility “with great respect and pleasure”, with the conviction that “we are going to give our audience an unforgettable night”.

The concert focused on James Newton Howard and conducted by Pete Anthony, which will be held the previous day at the same time and at the same stage, is, according to Navarro, equally important from the artistic point of view, and because its huge potential attractiveness. “It will also be one of the most relevant auditions we have celebrated”, points out the director of the event. He also addes: “We are talking about the music of one of the greatest composers nowadays, and, in fact, we have had his work in mind since 2007, but we have not been able to set it until this year, when FIMUCITÉ's consolidation is already absolute”. According to Diego Navarro, James Newton Howard “is a musician with a very distinct and personal style, and all the fans will confirm it when listening to some of his best works”, such as “King Kong”, “The Sixth Sense”, “Signs”, “The Village” or “The Dark Knight”.

On the other hand, the Festival has made a firm commitment to promote the screening of accompaniment images during the concert, so that “for the first time, the showing of some scenes will be synchronized with their own music, which will also help to improve the FIMUCITÉ experience”. And more: Alberto Iglesias, ten Goya Awards winner, will receive in the Auditorio the Best Spanish Composer Award and the Best Spanish Score Award given by the Spanish Film Music Critics, added, Navarro, who will also conduct the “Suite” for “Volver”, one of the most known works for Pedro Almodovar, to open the concert.

Children and young adult audience, without any doubt, will enjoy the concert on July 13, since they will listen to some world premieres such as the score from the popular literary and cinematographic phenomenon, “The Hunger Games”, or a selection from Newton Howard’s works for Disney’s “Atlantis”, “The Treasure Planet” or “Dinosaur”.

All of these, Diego Navarro reminded, “with very affordable tickets, according to the festival intention, since the first edition, that everybody could attend to a first-rate spectacle”. “This year – he added- these tickets have been for sale earlier that ever”.

The composer told that, among his highest satisfactions, it is “the certainty of keeping a great and beautiful project that fulfills us completely.” This certainty becomes clear, especially, “when, going abroad, we can realize to what point FIMUCITÉ and its distinct excellence level are known.”

Other the Festival's mainstays is the loyalty of its audience. “A lot of people adore it and follow its evolution during the year through the social networks, to the point of counting the days left to the opening of the Festival”. We have also to sum “others who come from Australia, London or Belgium to Tenerife, planning their holidays according to the dates of the event”. “It is a real pride”, said Navarro.

For that reason, “we need to keep all this audience trust in FIMUCITÉ”, pointed out the composer, encouraging everybody “to pack” not only the two symphonic concerts, “but all the activities of the festival”. “If it is really a miracle that FIMUCITÉ has kept the same growing quality and prestige until this sixth edition, I would say that, nowadays, taking into account the recent disappearance of other cultural events, this miracle is more alive than ever”.
