MAGIC MIKE
Warned in advance not to trust the advertising on this one, I really enjoyed it. Okay, it wasn't a laugh-a-minute, but I liked it a heck of a lot more than Traffic, by the same director.
The eponymous character, played by Channing Tatum, holds down three jobs or so, trying to save enough capital to start his own custom furniture business. One of those jobs is stripping, and it is into the world that he inducts The Kid, a 19-year-old he takes under his wing with heartbreaking results. Matthew McConaughey plays the owner of the strip joint, and while the performance is great, the character is a waste of human skin, and he also betrays Magic Mike. You see it coming a mile away, but it still stinks.
I liked Tatum's performance. The strip numbers were better than they had any right to be, and the rest of the story was sad without hammering home its messages or ending on a colossal downer. I recommend it, really. Just remember, it's not the second coming of The Full Monty. It's about dreams, and disappointment, and growing up. And stripping. |

Yes, MP, I always liked the James Bond movies but found the previous 2 more and more offline from the original idea. However IMHO Mendes put it right back on track again. Old fashioned, nice location, wit and sarcasm, nice chasings and a marvelously played bad guy (Javier Bardem even outstood his role in 'Biutiful')
Agree on the Newman part too, had the music before the movie but latter did let it fall on it's spot.
I think there were more than 4 winks to former 007-movies.

Went to see this one last Friday and I agree with your review completely. While the two first with Daniel Craig had left me unimpressed (especially the second one), this one really was a great film to watch. Great shots, very good action and a true villain (Javier really plays it perfectly). I loved all the winks to the old movies, was very nice to watch. Even the friend we had kind of forced to come to see the film at the cinema (she wanted to see Twilight 5.....) came out very happy to have seen it.
8/10 for me and will definitely be getting it on BluRay when it comes out.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA (all 5 movies)
Two weeks ago I entered the megaplex in the nearby town of Breda not exactly with a movie to see in mind.
It happened that they were screening the Marathon of Twilight: All 4 previous movies and the avant-premiere of #5 after midnight. As I hadn't seen any of those I decided to join in. Due to the fact that I had to catch the late train home I had to postpone the new one till this week.
Reviewing all in short: Overall I think the hype is much ado about nothing. The movies itself, each on it's own, are dready, emphasizing more on the relation of two hotties from Hollywood (Pattinson and Stewart) than actually telling the story.
Even the wedding took up half a movie!!
I think they could have done it in 3 movies as well.
The latter movie had the final conflict between good and bad and although the director made a nice twist in the story it still is not satisfying.
6/10 Best score IMO is the second one by Desplat although the latter movie had re-established Burwell again who did a great job too.
WALL-E
Oww, so cute. Calling a bit too many times EVE and Wall-E in my opinion, but of course Wall-E had no time learning to talk while cleaning up 'our' mess.
The true gem is the moral of the film. "an inconvenient truth" packed in an entertainin, beautifully produced animation that rightfully deserved the Oscar.
SINT
A Dutch horrortale about Sint Nicolaas, the predecessor of Santa Clause in local myths and legend. Instead, as the regular story tells, he would be a children's friend and protector, this version makes the 'Saint" gets his revenge on what they have done to him Dec,5 1492 by slaughtering a few hundred people when this date has a full moon.
Trashy movie by Dick Maas (de Lift, Flodder)
With all the overacted and dumb characters it got kinda funny.

You watched all 5 Twilight films in a row? I said it once, and I'll say it again, Dutch: you are hardcore. My hat's off to you. I myself saw the last film recently, because, well, my husband and I have seen all of them, in the spirit of irony. (I told my mother-in-law that we were going to see Lincoln.)
I agree that the story only needed(?) 3 films, but whatever, this last one was crazy. I was in the mood for a comedy, which it gave me, and the benefit of the movies is that one doesn't have to sit through the books.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VAMPIRE HUNTER
Okay, so I'll probably never see Lincoln. But I finally got to see this movie, and I enjoyed it. The title is pretty much what you get, played with utter sincerity and (possibly too much) seriousness by its cast. Benjamin Walker, in the title role, has now played two presidents, the first being Andrew Jackson. The movie moved quickly, didn't take too long, and featured some nifty set pieces. I enjoyed it, and now must start exploring Henry Jackman's score.
The only complaint I have is that they made Marton Csokas ugly. That's unforgivable. But at least there was Rufus Sewell.

DARK SHADOWS (2012)
Bit of a theme here, what? I never watched the original series. I saw one episode of the remake in the 1990s, and was disappointed the second remake didn't get off the ground, only because I'm a fan of Alec Newman. So there was probably plenty in this movie that I didn't get, on an insider level. Problem is, there wasn't much to get on any level.
This movie was fiercely boring. I almost quit watching it; I settled for falling asleep, and then taking it back 10 minutes just to see how it ended. If it's a drama, it takes nothing seriously, so you don't care about any of the characters. If it's a comedy, well, then maybe someone should have made it funny.

DROOM EN DAAD (transl. as "Dream and Deed"
These are lines of a poem from one of the most important Dutch female poets from the beginning of the 20th century. Henriette Roland-Holst was a convinced socialist and became politically active but could not withstand the difficulty that gave being a woman and the fact of WW.I
Nice documentary which saw a slow start due to the lack of additional filmmaterial to the letters and text that formed the basis of this documentary.
She and her husband (a painter) had a little condo just outside my hometown, which is a very nice area to walk and mesmerize, just like she did 100 years ago

Character-movie by director Michael Haneke.
Winner European Filmawards and Golden Palm at the Filmfestival Cannes.
Wonderful portrait about the dedication a man has for the care for his wife who suffers from two strokes and how this gets him to his knees also.
Sublime.

CLOUD ATLAS
A beautifully constructed 6-layer movie which sees a top cast playing the roles of people who, according to the subject of the movie that every human is connected to others in present and future, encounter their life-changing moments simultaneously in different time zones. The complexity makes it almost necessary to see it in a theatre to have the least distraction in order to follow the storylines.
Makes a Darwinist like me come to mesmerizing about a ' what if' in case love could actually conquer the force of nature.
Beautiful score by the known cooperation between Tom
Tykwer, Johnny Klimek and my friend Reinhold Heil

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS 3D
animation by Dreamworks that brings Jack Frost to team up with other Legends like Santa and the Easter Bunny ( marvelous that Aussie accent) to fight the Boogeyman who gains power and threatens all children.
Desplat scored this movie with a score that follows the magic and the flying thingies in the style he used for " the Golden Compass"

A weekend to Brussels gave plenty of time to do fun things and Gf and I chose to watch:
ANNA KARENINA (2012)
Marvelous adaptation of the Tolstoj-novel.
If this doesn't get an Oscar for production design I'll eat my hat (if I had one)
A classic adultry story against the backdrop of csaristic Russia in the end of the 19th century.
To stay true to the objection of Tolstoj to the russian bourgeoisie it's being staged mainly in a theatre doubling for the 'created' world of the Russian aristocracy with no view to the real world outside. Big extra plus is Marianelli's sublime score

LES MISERABLES
Hey, no vampires in this one. Well, none that I saw. Anyway, took advantage of parental babysitting this week to go see this with my mom and my husband. Almost everyone knows the story: former convict is saved from re-imprisonment, and by the end has, in the words of Forbidden Broadway, "significantly changed France by being an all-around nice guy." There's plenty of melodrama in there, a cast of dozens, etc.
Y'know, I adored this musical when I was younger. I read the book, in translation but unabridged, at least four times. But I'm not the person I was 20 or even 15 years ago, and I find that this just doesn't do it for me like it used to. I mean, the performances are good. Hathaway and Jackman are rightly the stars of this. Enjolras was blond, which is something that did and will always matter to me. But I couldn't take the pathos, not up close. I couldn't take the dead and sick and abused kids, and I couldn't take the young revolutionaries getting perforated, and I have no patience any more with the young lovers. Eponine was a heroine to my 14-year-old self. Now I see that she needs a visit from her Sassy Gay Friend.
Yeah, I cried, mostly during the first act, but only because what I was watching was making me genuinely unhappy. I was never so glad to see the Thenardiers show up.
My mom liked it. But she was an adult when she first saw this story, and I think that makes a difference.
I did like a lot of little shout-outs to the original novel, for which the stage musical just doesn't have time. Marius's grandfather! The abbey! Maybe I should try reading the book again, and see how I do with that.

SEX AND THE CITY 2
Watched this on a lark. Basically, if you like the show, and liked the previous movie, here's more of it. Some parts I liked, some were truly terrible. The abuse of a Liza cameo comes to mind. The worst casualty was the character of Samantha, who in a world of over-the-top was too much. You wonder how she maintains a professional career. The reviews will tell you this is the worst movie ever; I think that's unfair. But if it's not the kind of thing you like, you won't like it. But it's not like it's...
THE LAST AIRBENDER
A big fan of the animated TV show, I had to give this a go. What a terrible, useless, sunless movie. The film tries to adapt the first season of the show, and the compression means that no part of the plot makes sense, or hangs around enough for you to care. The actors are terrible, no one pronounces the names correctly (seriously, what's up with that) and there is zero humor in the whole enterprise. I guess the score was good; didn't really notice. But stay away from this movie. You've been warned.

Hansel and Gretel - I figured this wasn't going to be great, but a friend of mine asked me to go (she's older, like me). It had some cool special effects and....that's it. Just wait for it to come on HBO, don't even red box it or netflix it. I love Jeremy Renner and even he looked like he was having a hard time filming it. It's a "R" for one little naked part and gore. They left it open for a sequel, oh please no.

LOOPER:
The hubby and I watched this last weekend and I really liked it! The trailers really don't do much justice for the film - it was completely different from what the trailers made it out to be (IMHO).
We really liked the action and the story line behind it although for a span of about 5 minutes my brain got stuck in the time travel HOW!? loop, but thankfully the hubby was able to pull me out 
The films ending really stuck with me for a few days. It was actually kind of creepy in the subtle, you don't realize just how creepy this is, kind of creepy.
SAFE HAVEN
For Valentines Day the hubby took me to Safe Haven because it was one of my favorite Nicholas Sparks books (love all his work!) and because our fellow Minotian Josh Duhamel was the lead.
I have to say, they did an awesome job keeping this movie true to the book. The only difference I could notice was they changed the name of the little girl.
Like all other Nicholas Sparks novels/movies, there is a romance set in North Carolina with a sad side plot and a little mystery weaved in. All in all it was a great movie!

during blackout I have seen a great number of movies which I won't review all. I did put some remarks with some of the important ones.
Inglorious bastards : disappointing Tantino movie
Marathon (Dutch movie)
Het bombardement: another Dutch historical movie with popular Dutch singer in leading role, disappointing
Water: score by Danna and Rahman
Django unchained: fairly good Tarantino
The glass house
Evening
Pitch perfect
Flight
Lincoln: nice Day-Lewis role
Verliefd op Ibiza
Ushi must marry
Last two movies are hopeless Dutch movies with soap series quality but SST member Matthijs Kieboom did the music which are the best thing of the movies.

THE BROTHERS GRIMM
A fantasy story that portrays the brothers as fraudulous ghosthunters who stumble into a real haunting story. All kind of links to their actual fairytales. Badly acted though and just a little -meh-
entertaining. Music by Dario Marianelli.

Next flic on TV:
Lust,Caution a film by Ang Lee (Life of Pi) which I wanted to see already for a long time because of the beautiful Desplat score.
Story is about a young student in Chinese resistance who gets access to a collaborating Chinese chief of intelligence. The resistance wants her to liquidate him but her lust for him brings her to dramatical doubts.
Good production, entertaining movie with indeed a nice score
