Still a little regret I can not make it this year after 5 years of fun there in Hollywood (I will miss the browsing in Amoeba ).
I will plan a trip to USA next year (more Central or North East USA) Depending on when the Cracow event is next year I might combine my USA trip with a weekend Hollywood.
We will see. For now those who are going this year. Have a lot of fun and enjoy the concert(s)! _________________ That's the beauty of music. They can't take that away from you. (Andy Dufresne)

I believe the current plan according to the last email is to meet up in the picnic area between 530-6 I believe it is area 15 on the Hollywood bowl map, or same as last year, right?
Currently on the flight to LA, will be at the Best Western. Planning on sightseeing Friday. Flight arrives 830am |

Hmm. Nobody has reported to the good people of SST yet?
Quick details - John Williams concert program:
- Hooray for Hollywood, arranged by JW, with a montage of many many films.
- 'Whistling away the Dark' from Darling Lili, with Julie Andrews onscreen back in the day singing.
Then out came Ms. Andrews to host the first half, 'A Tribute to Blake Edwards and Henry Mancini.'
- Mancini Medley of 'Peter Gunn' (at which point it was noted that JW played piano on the original recording), 'Hatari!' and 'Charade.'
- Theme from 'The Pink Panther' with video, intercutting between classic sight gags & one liners. The two young kids sitting next to me had never seen any of it and were instant fans.
- 'The Days of Wine and Roses' sung by Monica Mancini (daughter)
- Excerpts from 'Victor/Victoria'
- 'Moon River'
INTERMISSION
- 'Flight to Neverland' from Hook, with a montage of flying from many many films, starting with biplanes, through people and space ships. The crowd of course went nuts when Mary Poppins showed up in there.
- the opening of Raiders of the Lost Ark done to picture, from entering the idol room to flying away with the snake.
- Marion's Theme, oddly accompanied by a montage of Indy's female conquests from the first three movies. It's Marion's Theme, dagnabbit. While I usually appreciate no mention of the Crystal Skull, it would have been best to at least come back to latter day Marion or not show that bimbo and the nazi at all!
- Raiders March, with montage of all things Indy. Except the Crystal Skull.
- 'With Malice' from Lincoln.
- 'Clash of the Lightsabers'
- 'Parade of the Ewoks' (yeah, it's a mystery to me, too)
- Star Wars 'Main Title'
If memory serves the encores were
- 'Yoda's Theme'
- 'The Imperial March'
- 'ET's Adventures on Earth'
I personally would have liked a little more diversity from the JW selections, but oh well. It's still spectacular to see him.
I actually don't have the program for David Newman's Big Picture concert on Sunday. I don't want to try to list it all and forget something, but the definite highlights for me were the "You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat" sequence from 'Jaws' and the final few scored scenes from 'To Kill a Mocking Bird.'
The lowlight was the grown men to the left of us talking through the whole thing. It opened with a montage of Oscar winning films, and they had to in full voice name every film they could as it went by. Which happened to be only the famous and relatively recent films, ie almost nothing black and white. Congratulations. You saw Brando and knew it was Godfather. You're a real film expert. Bah!
I didn't see this advertised, but the hostess ended up being Mary McDonnell, President Roslin Stands with a Fist herself. |

Thanks for sharing Randin, and it looks al too familiar indeed to me. So in the end my conclusion must be that I'm glad I didn't take the flight over for it.
I saw the Mancini things already in Tenerife.
And wasn't "Parade of the Ewoks" originally composed by Peter Bernstein for Battle of the Ewoks?
I must check the bootleg I have of that score.
I am still planning to come to the other filmmusic concert in Oct. though. Keep you all posted. _________________

Thanks for the GREAT REVIEW Randin!
I still hope to make it down there someday, and it's good to know what to
expect from one of his concerts. Just curious, does John ever talk or give insight on how he came up with certain scores inbetween
sets or is he all mr.serious through the whole thing and just conducts?
President Roslin as hostess? That's a frakkin' bonus
Dutch: "Parade of the Ewoks" is indeed a John Williams piece off the Return Of The Jedi soundtrack. Track 1 on disc 2 of my 1997 Special Edition release. _________________ "Listen, Centauri. I'm not any of those guys, I'm a kid from a trailer park."

Greetings Starfighter,
Yeah, JW talks a bit, but much less this year than in the past, of course largely because Julie Andrews was there speaking for the first half. He didn't say much during the second half, certainly nothing new or revealing. He did say that he was going to let us in on a secret of his process, but it was just an intro for that Lego video that's been YouTube for a few years.

Depending on dates of festivals / concerts next year I will plan another trip to USA (New England area or central USA area) to add some states on my list I have not visited yet. If possible I will probably combine it with a JW/DN weekend gathering _________________ That's the beauty of music. They can't take that away from you. (Andy Dufresne)
