Have been reading a lot from Haruki Murakami recently: Kafka on the Shore, and before that A Wild Sheep Chase, Dance Dance Dance, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
Great characters, surrealistic stories, I believe I'll read more of his works in the future

Still very much into the Darwin chronicle on iPad, but up to a lot of new stuff in physical bookreading.
once I found this little novelle with Somerset Maugham stories on a book market. Good reading stuff about his British colonial material.
Contains the stories: * Mackintosh *The Unconquered *The force of circumstances * The yellow streak *The creative impulse * An official position
Translated in dutch.

Just finished this book. Was a quick read, different from what I was expecting but still good. So many lives were lost on September 11, this book just highlights 12 of the brave firemen who were lost.

Finished the Sommerset Maugham stories and went on to the following fiction thriller and non-fiction historical volume:
  
MORGEN BEN IK WEER THUIS (translates as: Tomorrow I'll be home)
Easy read thriller from popular author Simone v.d.Vlugt (see previous reviews) 11y old daughter from a repetitive criminal is being kidnapped.
second book in a series with Detective Lois as lead character.
Edit: I went to the library and read the first of the serie as well called "AAN NIEMAND VERTELLEN (translates as: Don't tell anyone)
DE BOERENOORLOG by Martin Bossenbroek
3 way look at this piece of history from the former Dutch colonies in South Africa. Won the Libris Historical Prize and I was interested in the background story of this war

Am I the only one reading?
I finished the two thillers, and put 'de boerenoorlog' aside to read an historic novel by the same Simone van der Vlugt called "Rode sneeuw in december"
(translates as 'Red snow in december')
I like her writing of historic novels more than thrillers and this one is interesting because it blends two points of view of the 16th century war against the Spanish king. One view is that of a salesman's daughter from Leiden who falls in love with a doctor and the other view is that from Count Willem van Oranje-Nassau who led the first years of resistance.
Very well researched (took me only two days )
and then something completely different:
HET JULIETTE GENOOTSCHAP
(original title: the Juliette Society)
Erotic novel by famous ex-pornstar Sasha Grey.
Holds the midst between the movies "Belle de Jour" and "Eyes wide shut" Young filmstudent encounters
an upperclass secret club where she can explore her unfulfilled sexual fantasies. A more than average knowledge of movies helps you through the first part of the book where quotes and examples explain her drive.
Nice loose style of writing and fairly good reviews.

Currently I'm finishing the Polish edition of this book:
"The Emperor Of All Maladies: A Biography Of Cancer"
Impressive work. You can say it's a history of american onkology, but written with passion and style in a way that lets you learn a lot even if you are not very familiar with medicine.
It's not a happy, nor light kind of a story but it sure opens your eyes to many cancer-related details and helps to understand the still mysterious emperor of all maladies a little bit better.

Maybe we're so busy reading we don't have time to post, dutch.
Anyway, I'm slogging through The Ghost Bride which sounded promising in the library, began a bit pedestrian-ly, picked up a bit, and now barrels toward a conclusion no one cares about. Yay.
Also about to read Egyptomania: Our Three Thousand Year Obsession with the Land of the Pharaohs by Bob Brier. This came out too late for me to consider it for my Egypt seminar next semester. I needn't have worried. |

Our local library had a sales of written off books.
So for €3 you could load a paper bag full.
Got Gf and me 2 Dutch and 2 Flemish authors' works
I'll edit the summary when I start reading those.
Watch for the 'now reading'smiley on the cover.

PROBLEMSKI HOTEL by Dimitri Verhulst
Small novelle by this acclaimed young Flemish author.
For this booklet a stay in a refugee centre gave him his inspiration. His peculiarly humouristic approach of the stories about the refugees and what concerns them makes the underlaying social problem even more tangible.
Nice read.

DE CHRISTUS SMARAGD by German author Jörg Karstner.
(org. german title: Der Engelspapst [the Angel Pope]
Not as spectacular as the other book I have from this author but still a nice read.
Story is based on an actual event: The murder of a commander of the Swiss guard in the Vatican.
Other historical events and mysteries are combined with that to a fantasy story about a mysterious new pope and an officer of the Swiss Guard who has to overcome intrigues and doubts that prevail in the hierarchy in the Vatican. An emerald containing the carved portrait of the real Christ is the red line.

"The Lies of Locke Lamora"
I have finished "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card lately and now I started to re-read "The Lies of Locke Lamora" - first novel of a adventure/fantasy series by Scott Lynch. It's a good read when you want to relax with a page-turner in your hand and enjoy entertaining style of the book.
I wanted to get back to this story after couple of years, because recently I also have bought the third book of the series I haven't read yet.

I finally finished my e-book version of Darwin's " Origin of Species"
As expected it was a thoroughly scientific book written in the explaining, verbal and opulous manner many University professor would try to avoid to keep audience attention.
Several times, no, even often I had to re-read a sentence that took half of a page and use my dictionnary to look up meanings of scientific words.
Look into any page yourself and find out what I mean by that
BUT: It was all worth it.
Man!, if he had known about DNA I think he would have gone mad of enthusiasm.
Now, I've started to follow my New Year's resolution of studying the Principles of Thomas R. Malthus, whom Darwin was a great fan of.

Charming, Dutch.
I'm trying valiantly to read Phonogram V.1: Rue Brittania, but the whole thing feels like a joke I'm never going to get. Frustrating.
I'm also reading Evangelii Gaudium, by Pope Francis I. Because why not, and it's free, and I feel like giving it a shot. So far, not doing great things for me, but that's not his fault.
