FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASE
THE LOFT SOUNDTRACK
Featuring Original Music By John Frizzell
(January 12, 2015 – Los Angeles, CA) – Varèse Sarabande Records will release THE LOFT – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD January 20, 2015. John Frizzell (GODS AND GENERALS, TV’s THE FOLLOWING) composed the original music for the film.
“Erik Van Looy [director] and I worked very closely together to create a score for his film that augmented the intricate structure of the story,” said Frizzell. “Told through a series of flashbacks, this thriller slowly reveals more and more, all the time asking more questions. My goal was to have the score use themes to have this precise web of story lines reach maximum impact for the audience.”
In 2014, John Frizzell began Season 3 of Kevin Williamson’s FOX series THE FOLLOWING, and season 1 of Williamson’s new CBS series STALKER. Frizzell’s work includes scores for films as varied as ALIEN: RESURRECTION, the cult hit OFFICE SPACE, GODS AND GENERALS and THE PRIZE WINNER OF DEFIANCE, OHIO. He collaborated with rap star DMX’s producing team on the score for the crime drama CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE and composed the score for the Looney Tunes characters in the short THE WHIZZARD OF OW. His additional film credits include LEGION, TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D and BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD DO AMERICA. For television, he created the score for the award-winning biopic JAMES DEAN and the acclaimed telefilm CRIME OF THE CENTURY, to name a few.
Frizzell began his musical career singing in the chorus of the Paris Opera Company and the Metropolitan Opera Company. He studied at the USC School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, during which time he met one of his mentors, guitar legend Joe Pass. After college, he worked for acclaimed producer/vibraphonist Michael Mainieri, who owned a Synclavier, the first digital music workstation. Frizzell became a skilled synthesist, which led to work with Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, for whom Frizzell provided orchestrations to Oliver Stone’s landmark miniseries WILD PALMS. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, Frizzell met and subsequently collaborated with composer James Newton Howard on THE RICH MAN’S WIFE and DANTE’S PEAK.
An advocate for film music issues, Frizzell serves on the Executive Board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and has instructed graduate students at USC Thornton School of Music, and was the Honorary President of the 2007 International Film Music Conference in Ubeda, Spain.
Karl Urban (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS) and James Marsden (2 GUNS) star in the tense psychological thriller THE LOFT, the story of five guys who conspire to secretly share a penthouse loft in the city--a place where they can indulge in their deepest fantasies. But the fantasy becomes a nightmare when they discover the dead body of an unknown woman in the loft, and they realize one of the group must be involved. Paranoia seizes them as everyone begins to suspect one another. Friendships are tested, loyalties are questioned and marriages crumble as the group is consumed by fear, suspicion and murder in this relentless thriller.
“The weaving of flashbacks in this films creates an opportunity for themes to augment the connection and story lines. I made a sort of a map of the themes at one point during the process just to keep it all clear in my head,” described Frizzell.
His tonal palate included, “live strings and low brass mixed with a panoply of oddball things. A solo violin plays one of the main tension riffs. The sound of the fiddle is manipulated and distorted to make it almost unrecognizable. Many of the pulsing tonal sounds come from an upright piano that I sawed the keyboard out of to expose the strings and then played with mallets and my hands. There is a good amount of guitarviol in the score which is an instrument that is more or less a cross between a guitar and a cello.”
Open Road Films presents THE LOFT, in theaters on January 30, 2015. THE LOFT - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande Records will be available digitally and on CD January 20, 2015.
