Last Friday, we had our Staff Appreciation day here at the library where I work. I was one of the honorees because I have worked here at the Rice University library for 25 years now. My supervisor wrote and the head of my department read my accomplishments. There were a few things in there I was unaware of until the reading. I am so pleased with it, I just wanted to share it with someone and NOT on Facebook. Smile

It goes: (and for those of you who don't know, my real name is Kim Williams!)

Kim Williams started work at Fondren Library in November of 1990 as a Serials Shelver and moved into the position of Serials Record Assistant three months later. In these early days, Kim handled a variety of tasks, including shelving of journals, filing of invoices and purchase orders, and tattle-taping of books in addition ot her primary duty of receiving and processing print journals. And we received thousands of print journals issues each month. As the nature of journals, and library work in general, has changed, Kim continues to adapt to various tasks as needed, helping out in the mail room and working with electronic journals while still receiving our physical subscriptions, including journals, microforms, and looseleafs.

Over the course of her career, Kim has remained conscientious about the importance that prompt receipt and claiming of serials has had on the Rice Community. Fondren Library's recent designation as a gold-level member of WEST - The Western Regional Storage Trust, a distributed retrospective print journal repository program serving research libraries - was determined because our print journal holdings were validated for both completeness and condition at the issue level. The completeness of those print journal holdings is thanks in large part to the efforts of Kim and her colleagues in Technical Services in ensuring that our print journals were received and claimed and made available to researchers at Rice - and now the efforts of that work is even more significant to the research and preservation needs of the national library community through the WEST program.

And there remains a demand from our patrons for speedy receipt of materials, including patrons who wish to read daily newspapers as soon as they arrive here at the library. A comment that we received just a few years ago from a Market Data Analyst at the Jones School illustrates this point. The analyst wrote:

"I work at the Jones School and needed information in this morning's Financial Times. The Business Information Center usually receives the Financial Times during the day, but today's issue had certain rankings information that had not yet been posted on Financial Times's website.

However, I was able to get the information I needed because of the helpfulness of two Fondren Library employees, [name] and Kim Williams. Both women represent your Customer Service Standards! We're lucky to have them as Rice Employees."

Kim enjoys photography as a hobby, often bringing in recent examples of her work to share with her coworkers. And like many of us in Acquisitions and throughout the library she is a cat lover, who has shared the ups and downs of cat ownership with us. Kim is also a great fan of popular culture; from Bugs Bunny to Star Trek and Star Wars to the latest Sci-Fi series currently popular on television, she has seen them all. In the words of Kim's good friend and coworker [name]: "Kim is a voracious reader and has an incredible memory. Need the words to Jabberwocky? A hit tune from the seventies? ANY cartoon? Better call Kim."

Lastly, Kim has a unique sense of humor and an even more unique laugh that, once you hear, you don't forget. Congratulations to Kim on twenty-five years here at Fondren Library.

Okay, there are a couple of things I disagree with but I'm proud of most of it. I'm not a voracious reader really...I read a lot of junk stuff too. Laughing And I'm not limited to just Sci-Fi shows either. Otherwise, I am really happy about this.

Thanks for reading...
