The summer is here and with that come the all familiar blockbusters. These movies are usually centered around fun and are meant to bring in the large crowds.
Troy was a movie that I was somewhat dreading. Brad Pitt as Achilles? Although I think he's great in all of his other movies, I just didn't think he'd pull this character off.
I was fortunate enough to see this movie back in March for a test-screening. The music was maybe two 3-minute pieces looped together throughout the film. The special effects were not complete. The entire opening scene was tv-style credits over a backdrop of an island. This was all expected of course since the movie still had two months of post production.
Even with all of that I walked away from this movie quite impressed. Brad Pitt plays the role of Achilles perfectly. Whoever did the fighting styles for his character had a lot to do with making him believable.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is to let anyone who may put off seeing this movie simply because of the main role, as many did with Tom Cruise in "The Last Samurai", forget what you know. If your looking for a solid film to start off your Summer Season of "BIG" movies, this will certainly be worth your time.
Anyway ... that's my two cents. |

Interesting you should say that since I've actually been looking quite forward to Brad Pitt in Achilles, I've yet to meet anyone who didn't see Last Samuai because of only Tom Cruise, and in a similar vein, I'm looking quite forward to seeing Leonardo Di Caprio as Howard Hughes.
I've never really understood test screening's though. I'm not saying you did this, but people tend to brag about seeing them, and all I can respond with is, "You only have one chance to see a film for the first time. Why on earth would you want ruin that by seeing the film before it's finished?" Looped music? Sounds dreadful. |

I was actually a tad worried about the test screening for the reason that you mentioned. I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to movies. The less I know about them, the better they usually are.
We didn't know what this movie was going to be however. And it was free. So hell ... why not? And now, I'm looking foward to see what's changed. And to see if they changed some of the elements that we would have liked to have seen differently. |

Here I am, Cocles. Your first person who didn't pay to see Last Samourai on the big screen, mainly because of Tom Cruise (and a little bit because of the subject). Haha. For me Tom Cruise is in the same category as Julia Roberts and indeed Leo di Caprio, aaargh! I know these are prejudices though. So if I've seen all other movies that interest me, than maybe I'll give it a chance on dvd someday...

About Troy: my biggest concern wouldn't be Brad Pitt, but hey, I'm a woman...  According to Homerus, Achilles is a handsome hero, so that wouldn't be a problem for him. And in many movies he has proved that he can act as well, playing complex characters without great effort.
No, my biggest concern would be the creativity with which the original and very long epic has been changed in a 2,5 hours movie by the screenwriters. I hope it will not turn out to be typically Hollywood, with more money, more special effects and less heart, turning a great myth into a simple soap opera.
Interesting that you were able to see the testscreening, Circleprovider.

Notice I said, "ONLY" because of Tom Cruise. You admit yourself that the subject matter had something to do with it.
But I agree with you. Lots of us have that particular actor or actress that we can't stand and will avoid seeing at all cost. |

Opportunities to see test screenings are pretty common over here if you know where they're offered. |

I haven't seen Last Samurai, so I can't comment on that but Cruise was brilliant in Born On The Fourth Of July and surely proved then that he wasn't just another run of the mill big bucks actor who made money from his fame and good looks.
I don't have any concerns over Troy - I have seen a few clips (probably the same ones that everyone has seen), but I think it looks spectacular. As for the story line - if it makes sense and flows within the time it takes up then that is good enough for me. |

Count me as your first then. I didn't see it ONLY because of Cruisy boy.
I was told that in the film Tommy is told that the art of the warrior is not to think and that he did it perfectly.

That's a pretty decent summary of the mythology. I would recommend that anyone wanting to go see the movie to visit that last link. Unless of course you would like to know as little as possible about the story, so that it may be revealed to you in film. {I am usually that way - didn't read LOTR until after the release of the films ... so it was all new to me  } |
