I love the Final Fantasy stuff too, and midi soundtracks do have a certain warm, cuddly feel to them.
But, thanks to Jeric, I bought Medal of Honour: Underground the other week - now if that's where game soundtracks are going then film scores need to watch out. Michael Giacchino's music is brilliant; full, rich, chock-a-block with themes and totally narrative. And the thing is that, unlike the repetitve nature of tracks from the original final fantasy games, Giacchino's music seems to be music first, score for the game second.
The most up-to-date news I've heard is that Giacchino is scoring The Incredibles for later in the year. Anyone know any differently?
Big thanks to SST for introducing me to this great composer - I'd love to see him do a big film... |

I love the DX soundtrack. It is nice to have a symphony playing my favorite Nintendo tracks.
I am still partial to the first Quake soundtrack. It was perfect music for mass destruction. |
