Tron,
Well the difference is that fusion does happen big time , in these small devices called the fusor.
Due to mean free path issues the simple spherical design cannot be scaled up.
Now the cylindrical, or torid design can be scaled up. And me and some others have devised new grid designs two.
I'm not sure how much did you read (like the patent for example, or the structure of the device), but the big difference is that the fusor uses electrostatic confinement, while the tokamak uses magnetic confinement...now the electrostatic confinement method is much more efficient.
The fusor itself is a linear collider esentially, with a very ingenious desing. It accelerates ions from all directions towards a single point, or a line, or into a sheet.
Oh and the tokamak uses a very dumb method to "heat up" the plasma, resulting in random ion motion inside the plasma. In the fusor all ions are directed.
I never said it would be cheap to build/test/research with fusors, on the big scale, but a lot cheaper than the tokamak.
The fusor can produce fusion continiously, if supplied with fuel, and power, while a tokamak can only produce bursts of fusion. Not much use of the latter.
In short, the fusor which can be built from $2000 (a neutron producing, fusing fusor), will demonstrate continious fusion on your desk, and not neutron stripping...
A forum member will experiment with the fusion/boron-fission hybrid concept, looks promising.
The most information is in the forums there, and in the Hirsch-Meeks patent (there is a link on the website).
Ofcourse it will not change the fact (for now) that there is no economically (!) useful man made, fusion reactor. But the tokamak prooved to be a dead-end, and they still cannot move on...they want an even bigger, more expensive beast.

i think the oil light is on. _________________ If you have it you don't need it. If you need it you don't have it. You need it to get it and you certainly need it to get more of it. Which means you don't have it to begin with people just know. |
