I have had a wolf avatar for god knows how long and it was working well until a few weeks ago. Now it wont show up anymore and I cant get it to work.

It doesn't work because the picture is no longer at that URL yeh doofus. Find a new Wolf picture. If you don't want it to happen again send a copy of your avatar to Jeric and he'll store it on SST.

I have a question about avatars(it is probably realy dumb but oh well). How do you pick an avatar that is not from the list given by the site?

You can set a custom avatar by having a picture somewhere on the internet. Somewhere in the avatar options you can set the URL to that pic.
Like my cool avatar
