I would like to initiate a new way of thinking of a composer's best works: as far as I can tell, no one has posted anything like this yet. What I am looking for is SSTers' opinions about a composer's absolutely best tracks, and maybe their breadth. One way of thinking about this is if you were to produce (or buy) a 'Best of Composer X' cd, what would you want to see on it?

I have seen the 'Titanic and Other Film Scores' cd, but this doesn't even come close to what I would consider Horner's best work compiled on one disc. 'Titanic: The Essential James Horner Film Music Collection' gets pretty close with a 2-disc entry:

Disc 1:
1. Titanic-Take Her To Sea, Mr. Murdoch
2. Glory-Charging Fort Wagner
3. Glory-End Credits
4. Star Trek II-The Wrath Of Khan Overture
5. Legends Of The Fall-The Ludlows
6. The Land Before Time-End Credits
7. We're Back: A Dinosaur Story-A Special Visitor
8. Ransom-End Credits
9. Red Heat-Russian Streets
10. The Rocketeer-To The Rescue/End Title
11. Braveheart-End Titles

Disc 2:
1. Apollo 13-Main Title
2. Cocoon-Theme
3. Battle Beyond The Stars-Theme
4. The Man Without A Face-Lookout Point/End Titles
5. Willow-Willows's Theme
6. Field Of Dreams-Deciding To Build The Field
7. Patriot Games-Electronic Battlefield
8. The Name Of The Rose-End Title
9. Commando-Theme
10. Deep Impact-The Wedding
11. Titanic-My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme From Titanic-Symphonic Version)

But what do SSTers have to say about these track picks?

Finally, I would like to see similar threads started for other composers: Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, et al. What tracks would you pick for a single-disc compilation of their BEST work? (OK, for JW, you might need more than 1 disc.)

I'm anxious to see your replies! Have fun.

I'd add Casper to that list. Cool topic Luther_III.

I agree with Jeric, Casper's Lullaby is one of my favorite Horner tracks.

some other Horner faves:

Bicentennial Man - James Horner
The Gift Of Mortality

An American Tail - James Horner
Main Title

Brainstorm - James Horner
Michael's Gift To Karen

then there's that track from Beyond Borders, will request it and see it's the one before I post. I've also liked of what I heard from The Spitfire Grill.

Luther, fun topic. So when do we get to have fun with John Williams , Hans Zimmer and Jerry Very Happy

"Wallace Courts Murron" from Braveheart is my personal favorite.

And as strange as this may sound, I kinda like the main title music from "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids."

Casper has always been my favorite Horner score and I would definitely have to say Casper's Lullaby is Horner's finest track.

A couple of other great ones I'd like to see:

Legends of the Fall from the soundtrack of the same name.

And All Systems Go - The Launch from Apollo 13.

I also like Horner's old sci-fi. I would definitely include 'Futile Escape' from Aliens!

When I want to listen to some 'feel good', light music, I often end up reaching for the SNEAKERS CD. All the cues are wonderful, but "The Sneakers Theme" is my fave. Puts a smile on my face every time!

Another beauty is "Jenny" from THE ROCKETEER.

Rogue's choice of All Systems Go - The Launch from APOLLO 13:
...perfect music for a thrilling scene! I get tears in my eyes and goosebumps every time I watch it. It's fun to crank up the 5.1 system and make the windows rattle. Wink

Techo: Yup, the CD wouldn't be complete without "Michael's Gift to Karen" from BRAINSTORM.

For me no compilation album of Horner´s work would be complete without:

- "Enterprise Clears Moorings" from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

and, of course, my all-time favorite Horner cue

- "Pirates!" from The Pagemaster.
This swashbuckling, tongue-in-cheek track always puts a big grin on my face. Smile
