Following up on my previous James Horner post, I am looking for specific tracks (not just albums) that SST fans consider to be Hans Zimmer's absolutely best cues.

If you were to compile a one-disc compilation of all his best tracks, what would it contain? There is a live performance compilation out there called 'The Wings of a Film: The Music of Hans Zimmer':

1. Gladiator: Now We Are Free
2. Gladiator: Am I Not Merciful
3. Driving Miss Daisy: Driving
4. Thelma & Louise: Thunderbird
5. The Thin Red Line: Journey To The Line
6. Mission: Impossible 2: Nyah And Ethan
7. The Lion King: Lea Halalela
8. Power Of One: Mother Africa
9. Nine Months: Suite
10. Rain Man: Main Theme
11. True Romance: Main Theme
12. The Lion King: Busa

However, I don't think this represents what most SSTers would consider Zimmer's best works, and a couple films are a little too heavily represented. I don't know Zimmer's music that well, but a good start would be (in no particular order):

1. Crimson Tide - Roll Tide
2. Gladiator - Now We Are Free (something else?)
3. The Power of One - Mother Africa or Rainmaker (?)
4. The Thin Red Line - Journey to the Line
5. [Something from The Lion King](?)
6. [Something from The Last Samurai](?)

There is a lot of room left for one disc; what am I missing? What are Zimmer's best tracks?

Looking forward to your posts....

I just saw the thread posted by molossus concerning 2 new Zimmer compilations coming soon, but I didn't see any track lists. (Too bad I don't speak French.) These should be interesting to watch.

At the moment for me, Budget Meeting of King Arthur beats all his previous work.

I listenened to that track every day in the car.

*start crying*

I hope they have a special place in hell for car burglars.

That's because they haven't put it on their site. We have to find it somewhere else.
Not even Milan Records has posted both new soundtracks.

Budget Meeting is one of my faves as well.
Another great cue is "To Every Captive Soul" from Hannibal. It's much more symphonic in style than most of Zimmer's other scores.

For me, there are several things I'd like on a best of Zimmer CD:

From Gladiator:

The Barbarian Horde
Am I Not Merciful?
Elysium
Honor Him
Now We Are Free

From Crimson Tide:

Roll Tide

From The Prince of Egypt:

The Burning Bush

From A League of Their Own:

Life Goes On
The Final Game

From The Last Samurai:

A Small Measure of Peace

This is the order I would put them in.

1. The Final Game
2. The Barbarian Horde
3. Life Goes On
4. The Burning Bush
5. Roll Tide
6. A Small Measure of Peace
7. Am I Not Merciful
8. Elysium
9. Honor Him
10. Now We Are Free

And there it is, a great sixty-five minute compilation CD from Hans Zimmer. Thoughts? Wink

Thanks, Rogue, this is exactly what I was looking for. I think it's a great start, but a little heavy on Gladiator if you ask me. I could understand maybe 2 tracks from one ST, but anymore and I think you will be leaving out some of his other great work. Great call with 'Burning Bush' though. Great track!

Again, I don't know his work that well, but should something from Backdraft be included? How about Black Hawk Down?

It is definitely heavy on Gladiator, but those last four tracks all fit together as a sort of fifteen minute suite so it was hard for me to break them up.

To be more representative, you'd probably have to drop Elysium, Honor Him and either Am I Not Merciful or Now We are Free so as to put in something from As Good as It Gets and The Lion King, even though I'm not as crazy about those as most.

Any decent attempt to be representative would definitely need something from Black Rain (maybe Nick and Masa, but a very hard choice since they flow together) and you are definitely right on Black Hawk Down. Totally forgot that one.

That along with Woad to Ruin (King Arthur) and the Rain Man theme are my favorite Zimmer cues.

I would like to add two of my all-time favorite Hans cues:

- "The House of the Spirits", Track 1 from the soundtrack with the same title.

- "Bus Stop" from Spanglish... one of his most emotional works. Smile

OK so I am new here and this thread was from a long time ago but being a big Hans Zimmer fan I thought I would add my two cents. Here is my list in no certin order and I purposefully restricted myself to selecting only one track from each album.

1. Beyond Rangoon - Beyond Rangoon
2. Millenium Theme - Millenium
3. Roll Tide - Crimson Tide
4. Leave no man behind - Black Hawk Down
5. Now We Are Free - Gladiator
6. All of Them! - King Author
7. Idyll's End - Last Samuarai
8. Journey to the Line - The Thin Red Line
9. The Journey/Kopano Part III - Tears of the Sun
