On Monday night, at the Gibson Amphitheater (formerly the Universal Amphitheater) in Hollywood, Uematsu and his band The Black Mages took the stage, bringing their prog-rock arrangements of classic Final Fantasy music to American fans for the first time.

A sold-out crowd of screaming otaku cheered the band on as they played a high-energy set featuring arranged versions of the battle music that was used for the 1990 8-bit game Final Fantasy III and the PSone game Final Fantasy VIII. (The former has only been released in Japan, but that's not enough to stop Final Fantasy fans from playing it.)

Why do I miss out on all the cool Uematsu concerts? I had friends who were given VIP passes to the Dear Friends concert in Chicago, where they met Uematsu and got their albums autographed...

(Sorry, just having a bit of a pity party...)

Wow, that would be amazing. I'd like to make more trips over to the west coast soon. Haven't been there in over 12 years.

I wish you could come out to Calif, too, Jeric! Maybe with the help of a few SSTers, we could do some networking and show you a great time! Smile

For anyone who's in or near San Francisco and enjoys video games from the past, August 20th, 2005, is the annual CLASSIC GAMING EXPO.

CGE2KS is a huge event that couples games that are a blast from the past with cutting edge technology and gizmos. For more information:

I went to that concert!! It was AWSOME (I'm sorry I don't mean to rub it in or anything but if anyone has a chance to see them play go go go!). The only thing was that they had amp. problems...something kept on popping during songs and they never satisfactorily fixed it (although that didn't really matter with the Black Mages b/c they were loud and masked the infrequent pop with their playing). The band members were pretty damn funny and Uematsu like walked off the stage in mock disgust when at the end the Black Mages and the orchestra and choir teamed up to play "One Winged Angel"...LOL.
