Yes, you're not imagining things. The winner for Best Original Song is "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp." It's from the movie "Hustle and Flow." Don't get me wrong. Hip hop is an artform. Remember "Lose Yourself" by Eminem for the movie "8 Mile?"

I guess there hasn't been much choice in the Original Song category this year, but I'm thinking you guys have your choice of "song that should have been nominated instead."

Willy Wonka, anybody?

I had to get to bed early, so I missed watching the Oscars. What a huge disappointment Sad I really feel that the beautiful music that we all love is getting pushed further and further away.....

Well, holy Sh*t. I am sure glad I changed the channel after George “nipples on bat-suit” Clooney finished his little rant about how Hollywood solves society’s problems and needs to be out of touch. Rolling Eyes

Gee wiz, thank you George, I have not a clue where we would be today with out your guidance. Razz

“It’s hard out here for a pimp”??? WTF. So what’s next? “Pimpen ain’t easy” or maybe “It’s hard to drop out of school to sling rock and die young…..something something” BAH! Mad

I had no idea that being a pimp was so challenging. Here I am wasting my time with an education pursuing a degree when I could be out on the streets choking the living h3ll out of a ho. Thank god Hollywood helps with society’s problems. Isn’t that right George? Razz

“It’s hard out here for a pimp”???!!! It just doesn’t sound right no matter how many times I say it. Another example of Hollywood’s recent lack of good judgment and class. As well as proof that their creativity is slipping down the toilet. I want to vomit and I haven’t even begun to drink yet. Evil or Very Mad

While my initial thoughts on "It's Hard out Here Being a Pim," are not positive, I can't say that I've seen the movie that it comes from, and I have no doubt that it fits the movie very well. Also, I'm not exactly a pro on that style of music, but I agree with Lake Effect that it is an artform like any other. My vote would not go to that particular song, but I can understand why something like that might be picked.

However, I muted most of the song and just played "Into the West" from the Lord of the Rings. I vote for that one. We're too restricted by the boundries of "Only songs from 2005 blah blah blah." I'll show them 2005...

Who is listening to all these songs anyway after 1 year?
Most of the oscar-winning songs don't have the same kind of "success", publicity, longlivety etc. (like e.g. Titanic or else did)

When I'm looking at several decisions the academy made in the last decade regarding filmmusic, I very often get the feeling the don't have any clue what they're judging. (You know, as long as it is cute and cuddly... Neutral )

And one problem of most of todays pop, rock, soul, hip-hop etc. songs seems to be they all get more and more exchangeable... too much commercialism & predictable mainstreaming can't work forever.

Ha-ha! Very nice list there twopop, and very good point. (I didn't know Take My Breath Away won... that's awesome).

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I liked the song, bought the Hustle & Flow soundtrack, and think the catchy rap songs in the film were integral to its overall success. Without a convincing Dirty South rap song and its relative rawness, the film wouldn't have any street credibility, and viewers wouldn't believe in Djay's character.

I think the win for this song had more to do with the Academy's memory of Terrence Howard and Taraji Henson's fantastic performance of it and the Academy members' support of artists' creative spirit and their struggles. I doubt they paid much attention to the specific lyrics of the song. Wink

Well, you may be in the minority, Zirael, but I'm with you. I thought Hustle and Flow was one heck of a good film, and the scenes involving "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" had a lot of impact and were very important to the overall development of the film. Much more so, I'd argue, that either of the other two nominated songs.

Good points, Zir and Hurr. Of course my point was "Does Pimp have staying power?" Only time will tell on that.

There is a wonderful feature on the Oscars.com site called Oscar Night-Winners List. They have a page for each category with the acceptance speeches and 'thank you's. Here's the one for Three 6 Mafia:
http://www.oscars.com/oscarnight/winners/bestsongcategory.html

And if 3 6 Mafia hadn't won, we wouldn't have had that great Jon Stewart quote about Martin Scorsese. Wink

Wow, that really is a special acceptance speech. Quite funny to read out of context, I might add. Heh heh. Thanks for the link!

You mean, this?

"Going down. George Clooney, my favorite man, he showed me love when I first met him."

I wish to live in a world where all men can show love, regardless of direction. What a wonderful world this would be. Very Happy
