Or at least the tracks where they are horribly off-key. Yikes! Very Happy

Desperado - Dire Straits = Six Blade Knife
There is a cut from the movie that is the part that has the swearing in it not the song it's self.

Frankly, I don't envy JERIC this task one bit.

However, I am starting to get tired of "family-friendly." I find it often, if not always, is a cover for people who think that unless something is one-hundred percent kiddie-friendly, it shouldn't exist.

I think it would be great if we could put some sort of warning on individual tracks, or even albums, than remove them altogether or beep them, which is silly. Then people would have a heads-up, and know when to hit mute.

I have no problems with the Krupke song, even for kids. And there is nothing up with "Good to Mama" from Chicago except some innuendo. If we have to start scanning for innuendo, we'll all be here a very, very, long time.

JERIC could, I suppose, just remove everything with words. (Except the Buffy musical - I like it.)

Sigh. Like I said, I don't envy him a bit.

I can't speak for everybody, but I don't think that your generalization is fair. I'm definitely a "family-friendly" advocate, but only when it's appropriate. Some of my favorite movies are not family friendly, and because of that I don't watch them with my family. On the other hand, if I go to a kids movie I expect it to be family friendly and not teach my kids new words and biological funtions that they have no reason to know about. In that situation the burden is on me, not on the artists. They have the right to produce whatever drivel they want, just like I have the right not to view/listen/whatever.

JERIC has decided to make this a family friendly site, and I applaud that decision. Now I can listen to SST at home or in the office and have a reasonable expectation that there won't be anything to be concerned about (ironically as I hear the S-Word played in Six Bladed Knife) once the new tracks are in place.

The problem with the warnings on track is that some folks just play the stream at home/work/wherever, and are not constantly monitoring the site. JERICs idea allows us to play the stream and not have to always be aware of what's coming up.

As for innuendo, that's a very fine line, and I don't envy JERICs task either. Each listener has a different tolerance for it. I'd rather not have my daughter listen to something like that (my personal views on the whole of Chicago aside), and if JERIC censors that track I would appreciate his efforts.

Anyway, I don't mean to turn this into a political discussion. I just mean to offer my views and my support for JERICs efforts.

I agree J2. And I also think Jeric is doing an incredible job - and this is just another in the huge list of things he has done for us and the site.

The way I see it is this: Stremaing Soundtracks is essentially a radio station. A radio station that plays around the clock around the world so they can be no watershed time. I for one have never heard swearing on a radio station, in this country, at a time when children could be listening.

And, SST is so much easier to have on in the background, like you say J2. I use it first thing in the morning at home when I'm first up with my son. We play with his toys and have music on in the background. Obviously I could choose not to listen but I don't think that's the kind of site Jeric wants here.

I do agree that sometimes 'family-friendly' can go too far but I have to say I don't think this is one of those times.

I still think individual track warning could work, if they could work on the system, anyway. The queue is always at least an hour long; plenty of time for a heads-up.

I submit as an example of "family friendly" to you, my favorite regular radio station, WERS Boston. You can find it online at wers.org, and listen to it wherever.

On Saturdays from 10am-6pm, and Sundays, 12-I forget, they run a block of programs they tout as especially "family friendly." It begins with "Standing Room Only," the best of broadway and beyond. Then "All Acapella" which is what it sounds like. Then "The Playground" which is all kid's music from the past thirty years or more, and is great for nostalgia.

The point I'm making? Check out the playlists for these shows, all available on the site. They are family friendly, but you can still hear Rocky Horror and Chicago. And I don't believe they've had any complaints.

At the moment, my Mac is having trouble adjusting to the new streams, so what gets played here matters less than whether or not I can hear it. Sigh.

SSTs request system makes it such that we can't support programming like that. JERIC graciously lets us request what we want when we want (for the most part, and that's not his fault). I doubt he wants to get into the DJ business, and that's not what is best for SST in my opinion.

As for track warnings, even at an hour long you've now made it that you have to check the queue at least every hour. I know there's at least one business the streams SST through the store. Following your suggestion would force them to A) check the queue every hour, and B) have somebody manually stand by to interrupt/mute/whatever when objectionable material was in the queue. Under JERICs plan they would just hit play, sit back, and enjoy great music (and work like dogs running a business I'd guess).

j2 -

I see your point about track warnings and the store and such. Thank you.

I didn't suggest that JERIC become a DJ. I mentioned WERS because I don't want Chicago and Rocky Horror taken out of the playlist.

My point wasn't really about JERIC becoming a DJ as much as it was about SST not supporting a schedule like that. The request format doesn't allow it without changes to SAM and the database, etc.

Sigh. I clearly am not making myself understood.

I'm not advocating a DJ. I'm not asking for schedules, either, because i know this beams out worldwide.

I just don't want Rocky Horror to disappear. My parents played that for me and my sisters when we were tykes, and we all turned out fairly normal. Not preeverts, anyway.

I said that the only way to support specific programming, like in your WERS example, is to have JERIC act as a DJ, or do extensive rulesets in SAM. I don't think either of those are real options. I didn't think that you were advocating a DJ. I did think you were advocating a schedule, though. I don't think that anybody said anything about any tracks disappearing (in this thread, at least). I think that we're discussing editing tracks to be family friendly (selective editing).
