It's hard to say just what year was "The Best" for Film Soundtracks . . . But here goes.... based on when the films were released in the USA, these are the years I've narrowed it down to:

1964: My Fair Lady / Mary Poppins / The Pink Panther / Goldfinger / The Unsinkable Molly Brown / A Hard Day's Night / Father Goose / Viva Las Vegas / Zorba The Greek

1965: Doctor Zhivago / The Sound of Music / Cat Ballou / Thunderball / The Sandpiper / Help / Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte / Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines

1968: Funny Girl / Oliver / Planet of the Apes / The Lion In Winter / 2001:A Space Odyssey / The Odd Couple / Romeo and Juliet / The Thomas Crown Affair / Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Do you mean with "2001: A Space Odyssey" the original Alex North score or the mixture of Johann Strauss, Richard Strauss, György Ligeti and Aram Chachaturian? Wink

That would be the soundtrack used in the film in 1968, with the Blue Danube, and Gayane Ballet Suite by Aram Khachaturian, and Also Sprach Zarathustra . . .

Exactly. Not to forget the "Atmospheres", "Lux Aeterna" and "Requiem" by Ligeti!
