Re-Add Ligeti's Atmospheres/Lux Aeterna from 2001

Do you want the original compositions by Romanian-Austrian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006) readded to the playlist for "2001: A Space Odyssey"?
Yes! These works may be avantgarde, but so are many pieces of Herrmann, Goldsmith, Williams, Young, Beltrami, Shore, Goldenthal, Morricone...

I've been thinking about mentioning this matter for a long time.

Many of you know that the original Alex North score for the Stanley Kubrick Film "2001: A Space Odyssey" from 1968 has been rejected.
Kubrick instead used compositions by Johann Strauss, Aram Khachaturian, Richard Strauss... and GYÖRGY LIGETI (1923-2006)!
None of these composers were flattered btw., especially Ligeti, who later successfully sued Kubrick for using his concert works (Atmospheres, Lux Aeterna & excerpts from his Requiem) without his permission.

These facts aside, SST also owns the re-record of the original Alex North score AND the compilation album 2001: A Space Odyssey, including the classical pieces.
But the Ligeti-pieces are missing, so NOT requestable.

I admit, the musical language of Ligeti ain't the easiest one to listen to, but so are many works of Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Michael Kamen, Bernard Herrmann, Elliot Goldenthal, Marco Beltrami, Ennio Morricone, Alan Silvestri etc.

The pieces I'm talking about are the following:

1) "Atmospheres", a back then revolutionary work of sound collages and orchestral "mini polyphony" (Track 1 from the CD), which is still inspiration for many composers today.
2) "Requiem for Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Two Mixed Choirs & Orchestra" (Track 3)
AND
3) "Lux Aeterna", an a-cappella choir piece for 16 voices! (Track 5 or 11)

Of course, you can say now: No way! These pieces sound soooo weird!
As we all know: Tastes are different!

I don't think it would be too much work re-adding these 3 tracks to the playlist.
And I believe, since they were an inspiration for many other filmscores and composers, they would fit into the concept of SST!

So, friends! What do you think??

This is oddly enough a very tough call. I would normally take the stance that everything from the soundtrack should be included, avant garde or no, however, these pieces do not fit in with how I view SST. If these pieces were to be included, I would also be looking for the HAL 900 dialogue track to also be added as it was part of the soundtrack released on the CD, but that clearly does not fit into SST. (Although I must also submit that I am a fan of Chaucer from a Knight's Tale, the Ruby Rap from Fifth Element and others.) Good luck either way, the more music the better, but those pieces do not easily fit in.

Hey bpewien! Good post. I've been a little troubled as to why Gyorgy Ligeti's music for 2001 isn't avalible for listion here. Anyways, I made a request in the forums so that the missing tracks could be put back in the playlist.....Twice.

Jeric answered me in this one: http://www.streamingsoundtracks.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2474

And here's the other reason (Just look at the polls):
http://www.streamingsoundtracks.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2519

So.........Good luck!

Thanks for your input, Furyen.

Maybe we can get this work... Wink
