|
For my fellow band geeks out there (or former band geeks, as in my case) ...
If you have ever heard or played Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas Music, you know it is a fantastic piece of music. It is a very popular and frequently-played concert band piece, and this popularity is definitely well-deserved. High-quality recordings of wind band pieces are generally hard to come by, though this one is relatively accessible, with at least a couple decent recordings by renowned bands available. Here's one:
http://www.amazon.com/Russian-Christmas-Music-Vol-2/dp/B000055XDE/
Recently, an orchestral transcription of this piece was done by Clark McAlister. Now, I have inside information from a very reliable source that the US Air Force Band and Strings has just completed recording sessions of this orchestral transcription. (For those of you who must know, my sister is an assistant conductor with the AF Band in DC.) Even better, since it is actually illegal for the USAF to sell or profit from their performances or recordings, this recording will be obtainable for free. The disc will, of course, contain other tracks as well, all with a Christmas-y theme.
For those interested, I may (*may*) be able to secure extra CD's for interested parties, all over the table, all completely legally. So, if you are interested, keep an eye on this thread, and I'll keep you, well, posted.
In the meantime, why not post a reply if you're at all interested? Great.

As a fellow(former) band geek, I would love to get my hands on a copy of this! Please let me know if you need money for shipping! _________________ "Diaper backward spells repaid. Think about it." ~ Marshall McLuhan |

My "source" recently supplied me with a "bootleg" CD of a rough cut of the recording. It sounds great!
They are still working on the final mixing and mastering, and I believe it will be distributed this holiday season.
I am still not sure if/how many of the CDs I will be able to get, but do let me know if you are interested. _________________ "If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician.
