Arguably America's greatest living director, Martin Scorcese is set to have the biggest hit of his career with The Departed. He has always been a favorite amoung critics (averaging 85% Tomato rating) but box office has been relatively weak (average @$35 million per movie). This may be due to the fact that his movies are often dark and violent and profane, involving a group of men (often criminals) torn between the law, peer loyalty, the church and their own morality. However, this only accounts for 8 of his 20 movies. He has been quite diverse, making a biography, two comedies, a romance, a musical, two spiritual-themed movies and a documentary.
Having seen 16 of his 20 movies, my favorite would be Goodfellas by a clear margin. It was an instant classic filled with many great scenes, particularly the famously improvised "You think I'm funny?" scene with Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci (whatever happened to him?). With his great range of technique on display (long tracking shots, slow motion, voice-over, freeze-frame) and his perfect use of songs, this is Scorcese as the consummate filmmaker at the height of his powers.
My top 3 would be:
1. Goodfellas
2. The King Of Comedy (Robert DeNiro's best performance IMHO)
3. Raging Bull
Here is the list of his movies, with the box office result and critics rating from Rotten Tomatoes:
- 2006 The Departed $77.1 93%
- 2004 The Aviator $102.6 89%
- 2002 Gangs Of New York $77.8 77%
- 1999 Bringing Out The Dead $16.7 72%
- 1997 Kundun $5.6 73%
- 1995 Casino $42.5 80%
- 1993 The Age Of Innocence $32.2 83%
- 1991 Cape Fear $79.1 79%
- 1990 Goodfellas $46.9 98%
- 1988 The Last Temptation Of Christ $8.3 80%
- 1986 The Color Of Money $52.2 88%
- 1985 After Hours $10.6 93%
- 1983 The King Of Comedy $2.5 97%
- 1980 Raging Bull $23.3 100%
- 1978 The Last Waltz $NA 97%
- 1977 New York, New York $16.4 53%
- 1976 Taxi Driver $28.2 100%
- 1974 Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore $18.6 100%
- 1973 Mean Streets $NA 97%
- 1972 Boxcar Bertha $NA 53%

I have a hard time ranking them, but my faves are Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Last Temptation of Christ. I have yet to see the Departed though. |

Well there are several Scorsese movies that I have not seen and this post reminded me that there are a few that I need to see. But of the ones I have seen I would say that my favorites are:
-Goodfellas
-Gangs of New York
-Casino
And I really want to see 'The Departed' now that I have seen Infernal Affairs and see how Scorsese did in adapting the movie for American audiences. |

Goodfellas and The Departed are equally great, but I decided to choose Goodfellas. Gotta love those ol' time gansters.
I have only seen The Last Temptation of the Christ here and there, but I enjoyed it anyhow. |
