I think the so-called scary movies aren't so scary at all, they're just a bit of lovely entertainment.
Movies that really scare me are things like...umm, let's see...LEGALLY BLONDE comes to mind or maybe THE BREAK-UP....
Stuff like that is soooo scary I didn't even dare go and watch it...

I remember watching The Thing with my Dad when I was little. Boy did that movie creep me out!! I'd say Psycho is a close second.

I had a hard time figuring which movie frightened me the most: I think it's the Exorcist, followed by Psycho.
Of course, I was young when I first saw them
I saw The Shining for the first time recently. I think it could have scared me many years ago, but I find it rather, err, innoffensive now.

None of the above has ever been very scary to me, but I did vote for The Thing. Personal favourite from the bunch.
Only movie that has really freaked me, was Pet Sematery when I was a kid. Now a days it doesn't even pack the same feeling though... Kinda sad really. 
Add: Sorry for the mix up. There was somekind of a forum error. Can't delete those two myself...

Okay, accidentally posted the same thing twice, so now I need to say something else of interest. Hrm...
I haven't seen most of the films on snow's list, though they would probably scare me. The fact is, I don't do horror movies well. That doesn't stop me from reading about them as much as I can, which is probably a dumb idea. I gave myself nightmare about the Shining from doing that. |

I went with The Exorcist. Scary stuff. Another good one was Candyman...
...An intelligent, well-made thriller with all kinds of interesting political undertones. And without a single screaming teenager to be seen, (though the film's final shot does pay homage to this cliché), its not your typical slasher movie. |

On this list, I'd say The Thing was the scariest.

The scariest movie for me for ALL time is Alien.
I've got too active of an imagination to handle scary movies.

That was my case, I saw The Shining 10-12 years ago. I was alone and it scared me so much, and I remember it like the most frightening film I´ve seen, but maybe it´s time to see it again...

Good pick, Luther. Candyman is an underrated gem.
IMDb places Psycho at #1, Alien #2 (another good pick, vader), The Shining #4, The Exorcist #20 (!), The Thing #24. Candyman has a rating of 6.2 which places it well outside the Top 50, but it should be much higher.

I agree. I couldn't look to a mirror without thinking of Candyman for few weeks. Philip Glass sits right home with Candyman and it shows. The toybox tune still plays in my head at time to time (which ain't so bad, actually).
Alien also was a good pick. I saw it fully only few years ago, so it had lost it's biggest horror grib on me. |
