OK all you James Newton Howard fans, here's your chance to list your absolute favorite cues by JNH, in the same vein as threads for James Horner, Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, and Basil Poledouris. He has been pretty prolific in the last decade, and as far as I know, no compilation albums are available. So, if you were to produce your own "best-of" JNH album, what would you include?

I'm an admitted JNH novice, and he's not necessarily one of my favorite composers, but I'll start things off with a couple of my favorites.

Tarawa from Snow Falling on Cedars
Corynorhinus from Batman Begins

The latter I think also contains contributions from Hans Zimmer; I'm not sure if JNH's theme is self-contained in one of the other tracks.

I don't know his work well enough to add much else, so the rest is up to you! Looking forward to your posts!

Thanks for starting this thread, Luther. Smile

I don't even know where to begin... I guess with the one that started it all in my love affair with JNH's music:

THE MAN IN THE MOON: Dani Brings Court Water

WATERWORLD: Swimming
At the time this was released, I had an on-going email correspondence with Brad Dechter, JNH's main orchestrator. I did his discography in Imdb. Brad was pretty much responsible for this cue.

THE POSTMAN: Main Titles
The choir and pulsating strings just give me goosebumps. Too bad it's so short.

HIDALGO: The Final Three
Thrilling!

WYATT EARP: Main Title
Every cue on this must-have CD is a gem.

ALIVE: End Titles
GRAND CANYON: Grand Canyon Fanfare - End Titles
ATLANTIS, THE LOST EMPIRE: The City of Atlantis

There are so many more, but I look forward to seeing what others recommend. Smile

Wow, I think I might get carried away here if I try to list tracks. It may be easier just to list the albums:

Waterworld
The Sixth Sense
Unbreakable
Signs
The Village
Peter Pan: The Fairy Dance
Many of the cues in Batman Begins (the lighter, more thematic cues are probably JNH, while Zimmer adds pounding bass when necessary)
Dinosaur

The Fugitive and the Postman was what started my JNH craze. My favorites change all the time, but here are a couple tracks I like. "Best" is subjective anyways.

ALIVE: End Titles
FREEDOMLAND: Freedomland
THE VILLAGE: Those we don't speak of
POSTMAN: The Restored United States, Abby comes calling
KING KONG: It's in the Subtext, Beautiful, Central Park, Beauty and the Beast IV
RESTORATION: Land of Mar
BLOOD DIAMOND: London
INTERPRETER: End Credits
