I was overly annoyed last year and I'm overly annoyed this year. It's all the academy voting for each other and what THEY like. It means nothing to the rest of us. It's all politics. BLEH. Marianelli got robbed last year and Newman (or my friend, Mr. Glass) would have been a MUCH better choice this year. Poor Tommy...I love him so... _________________ "The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection." ~Michaelangelo

I agree that it is outrageous that Babel received the Best Score Oscar -- particularly given the other scores nominated. Santaolalla's score certainly is an excellent example of how not to integrate music and image. I felt the same way about Brokeback Mountain -- I liked individual tracks, but felt the score as a whole was seriously lacking.
I did like "Bibo No Aozora", though -- it would have made an appropriate "Best Tune" nominee, but that's about the only thing approaching praise I can muster up in reference to Babel..
I'm going to donate the Babel ST album to SST so that listeners can make up their own minds. SST should have each year's Oscar-winning soundtrack -- despite what we think of the Academy's voting record -- since SST is the world's leading online repository of film music.
I would like to say, though, that I very much admired Babel as a film. And I agree with those who say that it contains what is, to date, Brad Pitt's best performance. |

What about "12 Monkeys"? _________________ If our music survives, which I have no doubt it will,

Well, in my opinion, in terms of the "truthfulness" of the two performances, as well as what I would term the courage of his willingness to be completely emotionally "naked" onscreen (especially in terms of his character's vulnerability), his performance in Babel is the clear winner. Of course, these are subjective judgments ... |
