Wondering if a simple recommendation system, as opposed to star ratings, might help with the mission of identifying tracks for potential removal.
Instead of having to dole out star ratings, people could just hit a "Recommend this" button while listening to a track. You could then develop a "recommends to number of times played" ratio that wouldn't penalize tracks that nobody bothered to listen to yet.
I don't think people like to spend the amount of mental energy it takes to figure out if something is worth four stars versus five stars. |

I'm not in favour of this. We can't assume that music rarely played or lowly rated is of 'lesser' quality and therefore should be so penalised. Some of the best music here lies undiscovered, underplayed or underappreciated. _________________ "After dark all cats are leopards." - Native American Proverb |

I think you might have misunderstood my suggestion... actually, as I described, the deciding factor would be a RATIO of times played versus number of recommends. If a track was played 100 times and had only five recommends, it would rank lower than something played five times with three recommends. Tracks that hadn't received any plays at all, or few, wouldn't be penalized. Maybe something played 50 times with no recommends would be penalized. |

You would find a strong correlation between times played and rating. We already have a ranking system based on rating, number of voters and number of times played which bears this out. I can't see how substituting a recommendation for a vote would make much of a difference.

Blood Diamond and Partition have been played 67 and 48 times respectively, without a rating, so they could be penalised? New releases in particular, could suffer under such a system.
I am wary of penalising or removing any music by vote or recommendation, not least because the voting system is not used widely enough by enough people to be fair, and the Number Of Times Played is often reset by JERIC.
I think SST should be an archive of music, great or not-so-great, hated or beloved, overplayed or never played. Any decision to remove music should be done on a case by case basis irrespective of how many times played or rating or recommendation. _________________ "After dark all cats are leopards." - Native American Proverb |

I'm with TheSnowLeopard.
I like his words about SST as an archive of various music. Well said Snow! _________________ <i>"The piano keys are black and white,
