"Ogg Vorbis Coming Soon" That's so cool. I'd rather have the ogg stream than the 128 stream. Whee! and stuff.

At what quality would you like to hear ogg? I want it as close to the 128k but not too high because bandwdith fees get heavy at the high end.

I honestly have no clue. Whatever the balance between bandwidth consumption and quality is? I would have to agree with you on making it as close to 128k, but don't know enough about ogg format to um.. really have a say. I just think it's cool. I know. I'm an idiot. I know nothing about it but I think it's cool. Some people in my geeky chat room say it's cool so I tend to agree with them without really thinking, I mean, they know their stuff... I'm too lazy to look it up, though. :)

From what I have read Oggv3 is considered the default setting, but Oggv5 is considered CD quality.

OGG - For God sakes get here bloody soon.
My ears can't take the tinny mewling much longer.
. . . Oh , pardon me, it's just the electric cat. Batteries must be low.
I'd like 1 Ogg (de-scrambled) and a side of Trinity please.

Ogg Vorbis is an audio compression format that is license free and in the public domain, as opposed to MP3, which is patented. And even better: it produces higher quality sound at lower bitrates compared to MP3. There's a lot more info and other nice stuff at vorbis.com. I haven't come across Ogg a lot, but judging from the samples at Vorbis' site even 69 kpbs would do fine - at least on my speakers. I can barely spot any differences between the 128k MP3 and the 60k-70k Ogg files.

Loveslave said it as good as I could.

Better sound, lower bitrates.

The Ogg equivalent of Shoutcast is Icecast2.

Here are the links again.

Nooo! We should pronounce it like.. log!

An excerpt from the Ren and Stimpy "log" song with "log" replaced by "ogg"...

It's ogg, ogg,
It's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
It's ogg, ogg,
It's better than bad, it's good.

Everyone wants an ogg,
You're gonna love it, ogg
Come on and get your ogg,
Everyone needs an ogg...

JERIC,

I'd like to resurrect this thread since the mp3PRO pluggin is not supported under Linux unless you feel like messing around with Wine, the WINdows Emulator. I most certainly do not, and don't have the time to do so, even if I did. Razz

Since Ogg Vorbis is freeware, it's supported by Linux already, natively. In fact, my xmms player already has the pluggin installed. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Ogg is coming to an SST near you anytime soon...you seem to have removed the teaser from the LISTEN part of the web page. Can you reconsider? Please?

Quoting from SlashDot...

Nice2Cats writes "The Ogg Vorbis format came out far ahead of MP3, MP3Pro, RealAudio Surround, and Windows Media 9 Beta in a comparison of different audio formats by Germany's respected computer magazine c't. More than 6,000 people took part in the test. Heise says Ogg's dominance was most pronounced with 64 kBit/sec samples; the full magazine article (out on Monday) mentions that in pre-tests, some people actually mistook the 128 kBit/sec Ogg samples for the uncoded version. Let's hear it for those strangely named open source file formats!"

Having an Ogg stream too might still be possible. Give us a couple weeks for Jeric to iron a couple of other things out.

I got sad when the "ogg vorbis coming soon" text disappeared from the side menu... ah well, hopefully you will figure out a way. I never understood how you guys got all the different servers and formats in the first place. Perhaps it is too much trouble.
