Idea:

During short queues (under 90 mins), IF there's a SAM request in the list, lower the request wait to one hour for non-VIPs. It was nice back when that was the norm for 90-min-or-less queues, and I miss it, especially as I'm on the other side of the world from most requesters (China) and the queue's often 2/3 or more filled by SAM while my last request is long gone and I (and others) have to wait for our next request... and then wait for it to play.... Not that the variety of SAM is bad, but I kinda like the mostly-chosen-by-people playlists, it mixes the strange and new with the composers and albums they've discovered to be excellent.

I assume it's a 2-hour wait because that keeps it from getting quickly filled when people all log on in the morning (in Europe and America), but if there's a SAM request it was obviously not busy in the very recent past and this gives a good chance that there are still few members requesting. (Since any one minute of dead-of-the-night is statistically more likely to be followed by 30-60 more dead-of-the-night minutes than beginning-of-rush-hour minutes.)

I don't know how many times this has been suggested, but I wasn't able to find any threads in a search of "Ideas" that related to it. Forgive me if I missed one (or several). I also don't know if the software supports it, but hey, it's worth a shot!

Keep up the good work. While I miss the days of more frequent requests, at least it's a sign that the number of listeners is growing.

I'm not opposed to lowering the wait time for VIPs but I am for non-VIPs. That would reduce the incentive of becoming a VIP too much for my taste. I'll wait for more feedback here before making any changes. Thanks for expressing your ideas.

Listeners' requests are one of biggest advantages of SST and it would be nice to see request wait as short as possible. I also agree that queue built by listeners usually looks a little better than SAM's.

But on the other hand, I think that 2 hours wait for short queue is also part of JERIC's effort to gain more VIPs for SST. This effort could be quite important for SST's future and that is why I think that only JERIC and maybe Admins have all the informations to judge if your idea Miss would work good for SST.

So, my vote is "I'm not sure, because I don't have enough of SST inside look to vote -yes- or -no-"

Edit: My post can sound a little oddly after JERIC's answer but it took me very long to complete it (I'm at the office at the moment) and I haven't seen JERIC's reply before I finished mine. Confused Smile

Thanks for the input. I'll continue to see what others say, but obviously the final decision is nowhere near my realm of influence. Smile For me, VIP membership is up there with membership in the Wizard Rock EP of the Month Club - something I'd join in a heartbeat if $50 bills fell from the sky, but nothing I can afford in real life, or even request as gifts. But I understand the need to keep incentive to get those who can scrape it together to join. I suppose if I depended on SST to get me through the day at a desk, it might be a high enough priority to save for it for a while in place of other stuff, but I don't, so it isn't.

On a sidenote of curiosity: How frequent are requests for VIPs during <90min queues now? Last I saw was 10 min, but I think that was back when it was 1 hour for non-VIP. Still 10?

OK, VIPs, take it from here - sounds like JERIC might consider making changes for your request wait during short SAM-built queues. Are you interested? Cool

It is still 10.

There's a month-to-month subscription ($4.99/mo), if that would help.

Occasionally I (and I assume other Admins) go in and delete Sys/Admin requests from the queue when it's suddenly grown longer with SSTer requests.
We cannot do this on a regular basis because 1) we don't want to undermine the incentive to become VIPs who are crucial to the support our station; 2) often the server is being accessed for other work, and 3) we're too busy.

Also, SAM often has pretty good taste and picks hidden gems that would otherwise be overlooked! Wink

Exactly! I guess I could request more often than I actually do, but quite often I'm totally satisfied with whatever picks SAM comes up with, especially cause "he" sometimes comes up with stuff I didn't even know existed.

You are right! SAM is part of SST too Smile
And MissJubilee is not trying to get rid of SAM completely Wink

there are not a lot of things extra i can afford either - i can't afford to donate to this station as much as i would prefer but i do consider the $50 or a monthly fee worth it if it will keep this station on the air - i don't feel it should give non-VIP more frequent request times for the same reason everyone else has said - where would the incentive to become VIP be

there is no other station out there to compare to SST Long Live SST!
