I think by this point the haters wouldn't give a s**t if Jesus Christ himself came down and said he was voicing Megatron, but there are those that just want a fun movie. I'm in that category. I think I laid to rest the idea of a straight adaptation of the '80s cartoon a long time ago. I'm hoping Bay makes it big, fun and retarded (pretty much a guarantee on all accounts), but with enough recognizable Transformers to make my inner geek smile every once in a while.
I think a live-action Transformers is/was/ever shall be a dumb idea, so I guess that puts me in the haters category. What I don't understand is why some people are taking this so seriously. I must be among the unconverted. But then again, I did bitch in another thread about Lan Medina being replaced as penciller on Fables, and how it's messing with my ability to enjoy the series, so I dunno.

It will probably be an okay movie, but not a good Transformer movie and definitely not to the degree that the fan base were expecting. I think that it is hilarious that Mr. Bay is trying to make a “ realistic” movie that was based on a toy /comic /cartoon. To me associating the term realistic to any sci-fi / fantasy movie gives me the uncontrollable giggles. In addition , expecting what ever geek fan-base to just get over any creative liberties for the sake of realism in a film is ridiculous. A lot of what drives a fan base is the ORIGINAL concept behind the characters and story and they tend to want to see it translate to the big screen without too many creative liberties. I’m sure that many of us who are posting on this subject have seen many online CGI Transformer concept short films on the web. I have seen a couple that have been able to keep the integrity of the cartoons and comics. To be honest, personally, I could not care if every single part moved into a location for a precise fit for the sake of realism. Besides, these things are supposed to transform at a speed that would make such details unnoticeable. As far as Hugo Weaving voicing megs, It doesn’t make sense to cast the original voice of Optimus Prime and not cast Welker to voice Megatron. This is a big disappointment to fans of the franchise. Not to mention the occasional fans who watched the cartoon series. I am not a major fan of transformers but I did watch the cartoon everyday after school and owned a total of two transformer toys. But I do get upset when original stories and characters of any kind are tampered with.
Tim Burton was toying with idea of making a campy Batman comedy movie with Bill Murray at the helm. But reconsidered it after discussing the concept with Bob Kane (creator). Then the sequels came and with each sequel came disappointment and the disappointment grew exponentially as each one was unleashed unto the public. Two lessons were learned during the onslaught of Batman films, One: Stay true to the original characters and story lines. Two: Keep the patulli stink f*cktard known as Joel Schumacher away from any franchise that is remotely associated to a strong fan base or let it fall prey to a day-glow, neon retrofit of epic proportions that would send even the mightiest night club techno-raver screaming into the streets only to collapse from massive seizures and hysterical blindness.
Sam Raimi understood this and kept the Spiderman films as close to the comic’s vision as possible. Christopher Nolan understands this as well. Batman Begins was an excellent adaptation from comic to big screen and people can’t wait to for the sequel. And we shall never speak of the Joel Schumacher abortion again and pretend that the other Batman Movies never existed.
Who knows if Mr. Bay’s Movie will be a success. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. I would think it is a movie based off of the Transformers with some similarities. But it is not a Transformer Movie. According to rumor control, too many departures have been made to make it recognizable to even the smallest Transformer fan. Now there will be even more slow-mo shots added to the flick with even more wacky explosions shot in precarious angles to distract the audience even further from realizing that the movie is not what it was intended to be. More shots of special ops soldiers with headsets running around throwing out cool military lingo might help.
*By the way, being prior service myself and working in a special ops platoon, I never saw any headsets. Is Hollywood suggesting that all soldiers are training for drive-thru service after their enlistment commitment is over? Sh*t like that is just insulting to those who know better. Another example of how much Hollywood commits to researching “realism“*

I just got back from the theatre and... wow! What an amazing spectacle. Sometimes I just sat there with a grin all over my face.
The story wasn't all that much, though, and the MacGuffin was very obvious. There were characters that we could've done without and scenes that were very cliché. On the upside, some of those clichés was obviously put in for all us fanboys and -girls.
The action was awesome. There were times I just wanted to stand up in the theatre with my arms above my head and just scream out "Yeah!". Robot on robot action almost beats flying into the Death Star... almost
The effects were beyond awesome. You get so pulled into the movie that you completely forget that all these robots are made on a computer.
Steve Jablonsky certainly did his best to perform good with the music, and he obviously got a great deal of help from his Media Ventures colleagues. I'm not saying the score was bad. There were times the score got me so involved that I found myself at the edge of the seat tapping the rythms on my knee. The music certainly fit into the movie, and there were a couple of times I could definately hear some of Jablonsky's unique style.
Overall this is the summer blockbuster to see this year. Forget Die Hard. Forget Spiderman. Forget Oceans 13. This year, nobody can beat Optimus Prime and his band of Autobots.

I just saw the movie last night. My sister's boyfriend is a Transformer fan and we found out the theatre in town had the movie early (don't ask me how), so we went to see it. Now, I wasn't really a Transformer fan. I had watched the original show as a very little kid, and I watched Besties (Beast Wars in the States...apparently "war" can't be in the title of a kid's show here) years ago, so I did know who everyone was, the basic storyline, etc, but I wasn't a *fan*. Now I am.
Yes, there are plot holes, although they aren't big enough to drive Optimus through, and there are characters that really didn't do anything useful, but it didn't matter. That movie sucked me in completely, so badly that I hardly noticed the drooling fanboy on my right with his action figures and girly laughs of glee whenever a robot appeared. I intend to go watch it again...and maybe even again after that.
I loved Optimus' voice. It made him seem wise and kind without making him sound like an old man (I'm from the "new Optimus voice" generation, by the way). I also really liked Shia LaBeouf in it, which shocked me. I am prejudiced against everyone that ever stared in a Disney channel show, and I was determined to hate that kid...turns out I couldn't. That says something! What also says something: I didn't sit there and even once think "oh yeah, this is a Michael Bay movie".
Canon-thumping ultra-purists will not be happy...but then I doubt anything would please some of them. Yes, Optimus has flames and isn't a cab-over-engine...he's still bad@ss. Yes, Megatron doesn't turn into a gun and his voice isn't original...he's still awesome. And yes, Bumblebee isn't a Beetle...but god I want a Camero now. Just enjoy the movie for what it is: a fun ride

Yeah, you know, this movie was really pretty good. I went in with almost no expectations, and I came out feeling very entertained. The script was a lot better than I had been expecting, and the visual effects fit in almost seamlessly with the live action characters. The pace of the editing seemed a bit too fast at times, enough so that I had trouble telling some of the transformers apart during the big action sequence at the end, but that was really my only complaint. I guess my faith in Michael Bay has been restored at least a little bit!

Alright, well there wasn't a soundtrack forum thread so I decided to keep everything together and post the information here. There are 30 second samples of the Transformers score (which will be released Tuesday, October 9th) at Walmart.com. Sounds like it captures all the really good parts, looking forward to this release as it has one of my favorite tracks for 2007!
