Hi, SST friends and Film Score freaks !
... I am still new here and like to have a better orientation about the "nearby 20,000 crowd" of SST. Meanwhile I got some wonderful contacts and intersting discussions. It is really great joy to share with you this phantastic interests.
Some of you maybe already know me from the Chat. I am enthusiast of "Indian Classical Music". Inspite I love every kind of Film score type. Bombastique philharmonic orchestra, pure piano style or modern, spaced sounds of Electronics, or heavy beat percussions. Depends if everything keeps in balance.
In my view, my feelings and emotions a "good sound" means expressing mostly that what the pictures on their own - within the different sequences and binded in the whole move - like to tell. But no doubt ! - A good move has to have excellent music composition. It's like the dot on the "i". No dot, no "i".
From the San Francisco World Music Festival 2007 some unique instruments, "real instruments" have been presented, maybe neither you have seen or heard before. Do you know what's a kamancha is ?? - Or a tar, gu-qin and not missing, the Indian instrument sarode ??

Did you know that one of the best Indian music maestros, Ali Akbar Khan (settled in San Francisco) was the composer of famous "Little Buddha" ! - That way maybe you are interested to know more from this sub continent...
Anyhow. Let's share your personal taste of instrumental sounds if you like ?? - You prefer more pure natural sounds, or you are this mousce clicking specialists creating sound dramas by bits & bites via MIDI, USB and Composing software ??
With interests I follow your aspects of qualitatively film score music...

Hi ElJay - I'm impressed by your musical enthusiasm! I haven't heard much Indian classical music - what do you recommend? I enjoy lyrical Bollywood soundtracks and their percussion.
Perhaps you would like to edit the subject line to ask "What is your personal taste in instrumental sounds?" so you receive more responses.
I enjoy symphonic sounding film music as well as electronic stuff that samples from ethnic music, similar to Thievery Corporation or Bombay Dub Orchestra. Have you visited Entranced.FM - SST's sister station that plays electronic and chill music?
I think you said earlier that you were a radio producer. I'm curious - what kinds of music/programs does your station produce? |

... nice to meet you. "Cello" is a good keyword. We had a couple of days before a discussion in the Chat room about.
If you talk with a Cello player he/she says it is a very simple instrument. Cello let me remember immediatelly to the Barock music. A good friend of mine, one of the best Cello players in the world, Gavriel Lipkind did the recording of all Bach Suites, amazing (www.lipkind.info).
Another one of bach is for piano, called "fuga" (Wohltemerierte Klavier), written in "A Minor". Might listen to as Midi file here, got the tip from the Forum of Soundtrack-board.de:

I find I like a lot of the traditional Japanese instrumentation. A lot of it continues to be used in modern media... no doubt a result of Japan's nationalism and traditional heritage.

I should add to my instrumental preferences - high strings like from those Golden Age composers, woodwind solos, piano, acoustic guitar, also partial to the taiko drumming and koto (probably similar to Weaponlordzero's tastes), tablas, hammered dulcimer, and whatever sounds Thomas Newman achieves with his wacky instrumental assortment. |
