Should the chat window indicate how fast (or slow) the chat is moving? |
Yes, I might even chat more if I don't have to keep such a close eye on it |

|
I'm willing to donate my mad programmery skills to make this happen... as in, I can do this feature and another one if there is a backlog of work.
Here's the idea:
When the chat window refreshes, I'd like the most recent messages to be colored or bordered in some way that makes it clear they are newer than the messages I saw the last time the window refreshes. As it is, the refresh flash of the window catches my eye every 30 seconds, and I stop what I'm doing to glance at the window only to see that nothing has been changed, or that a lot has changed but I can't tell how much until I read something that I've already read before.
Here's a kind of storyboard, showing the chat window like I imagine:
Snapshot #1 (same as now):
TwilightSoul: It's sposed to be, red. Have you seen the movie? It's pretty good, IMHO
RobW720: hah
Lieserl: *CQCs zgurl*
Redjack_Ryan: Oh god this song is way too happy
Snapshot #2 (30 seconds after Snapshot #1):
NeoBN: although I like disneymovies I have missed this movie... have I to be ashamed?
TwilightSoul: It's sposed to be, red. Have you seen the movie? It's pretty good, IMHO
RobW720: hah
Lieserl: *CQCs zgurl*
Or, instead of fading the text itself, use different background colors.
If someone can put me in touch with the site programmers, I will explain in more technical detail what I have in mind. Again, I'm not asking them to do the work (except review my code for correctness, etc). |

I'll vote yes, but quite frankly I don't really care one way or the other.
I'm pretty good at ignoring the chat... the only thing I dare not do is participate whenever I want to accomplish anything else besides chatting. _________________ "Welcome to the paranoia club; cheapest fees in the universe and membership lasts forever."

I think the fading of the text is better.
We already have different colours for the names, I'm afraid my eyes couldn't stand colours for texts.
I'm not sure of what it'll exactly look like, but I'm ready for a try. _________________ There is no problem that can't be solve without any solution |

I have voted yes, but hope when it is implemented, it is a bit subtle, so you can see the difference, but it is not like a big party of colors. _________________ That's the beauty of music. They can't take that away from you. (Andy Dufresne)

I like this idea. I'm not often on chat so when I am I also get distracted after each refresh and I reckon this would certainly help me out! |

This is a very interesting idea
I believe this functionality can be implemented with a Greasemonkey script. Worth a try, I'd say |

Twilight, your idea is interesting. I beamed it up to Admin Forum in order to discuss it. _________________ I think I think, therefore I think I am. (Ambrose Bierce) |

Not all of us have or want Firefox, however. And yes, I know I'm a heretic for believing that.

As long as the text is only subtly different. I think in your example, the lapsed text is too dark... imho _________________ I do not wake up with thoughts of control and rebellion, but thoughts of purpose and righteousness and the empowerment to fulfill those convictions that define me. |

Oh, of course. I'm just using what's available in the Forum message area, which is pretty limited. And if this gets greenlighted, then I'd want to try different colors and see what works for most people.

Not sure I am keen on it. perhaps too subtle? It makes things look like pale links.
Could we do a different color? Like, maybe a yellow tinge, or BRIGHT WHITE for the new ones, and a notch less white for the older ones?
My 2 cents.

as much as I love the color blue... the light blue text is rough on the eyes.
I liked the idea of fading out the text to a darker shade of gray like the example in the first post. |

I haven't played enough for a strong opinion, but I think that the colors should at least be reversed. New posts brighter than old.
