I see that there are atleast of handful of fans of AA here so a composer thread is in order.
For those who want to sample AA, there's great news in the form of an upcoming release.
"BOF - Armand Amar" is a 2CD compilation of 40 tracks from 15 films, that will release on Sep 23, 2008.
Since most of his scores are pricey, this seems like a nice one to start with. |

AA's score for La Piste seems to be on ebay for a low starting price ($6). Those interested might want to keep a watch on Item #160273415349.
Thanks for the Napster link, Lady!
We do have a bunch of AA scores here so it's best to sample them to see if you'll like him. But in general his sound is somewhat introspective and somber. He has scored for a number of movies with a middle-eastern setting (or connection) so there's usually some ethnic influence in the scores either by way of orchestration (the duduk features prominently) or by vocals.
Some of his works (La Jeune Fille et les Loups, Sagan) are in the minimalistic style (a bit like Philip Glass), some others are more upbeat, pretty and delicate (the landscape/geography/documentary ones like Vu Du Ciel, La Terre: Vue du Ciel, La Premier Cri), while others are melancholic beauties (La Piste, Indigenes). And of course, there's Bab Aziz which (for fans of world music) really unfolds like poetry leaving a lasting impression and moving one to tears.
If anything negative has to be pointed out, it's that the more you listen to his scores, the more they all seem to blur out. A lot of his scores seem to be cut from the same cloth. |
