Hey, all. If you go to this site, you can see samples from a bunch of Marco Beltrami scores, Hellboy being the illustrative example here. See how each track is preceded by some sort of code? Like 2m8, or 4m2? Does anyone here know what those codes mean? I've seen them elsewhere. For example, if I play my Batman: Gotham Knight score in my car, the car shows the track titles with similar codes in front of them. What's up?

I think it is reference to Nashville Number System

I dunno, Sirius. The codes on the tracks seem too simple, to me, for that to be the explanation. Plus, from what I know about music (and it's not a small amount) the Nashville number system would not be an adequate nor desirable way to describe score.

I thought it might have something to do with track length, or position of the queue in the movie, maybe.

Interesting. I'd like to know it too LadyInque.

I don't know what those codes mean.
One thing I noticed is they are part of the song titles written on the sheets with notes (you can see this by clicking PDF icons alongside those samples).
So maybe you are right, maybe it might have something to do with position of the queue in the movie or for example with the reel...

Being a person that plays country music, uses and is familiar with the Nashville Number System, I can say with confidence that I don't believe that's what it is. The Nashville Number System (without going into much detail) is a chord progression identification system. For example; if a song is in C Major, the numbers of the system would go as follows: 1=C, 2=D, 3=E, etc.) Now in some circumstances, you would add a small m or large M to indicate a minor or major chord or add a 7 or 9 for inversions and adding more notes or leading tones to the chord. An example would be 2m7 which would be a D minor chord with a seventh added called "D minor seven".

I believe this refers to something else entirely.

I saw someone at Hans-Zimmer.com Forum explained what those codes are. I can't find the thread right now, but I'll post it if I find it.

If I remember correctly, they describe which part of the reel a piece of music was written for.

Edit: ok I found it:

Beaten to the punch by Pridelander, but yes I was sure it's notation for where the cue fits into the movie too; basically the written version of a click-track or time code.

However, more investigation yielded the following link, and the answer in the forum Pridelnader linked to appears to be bang on.
