Sometimes, one track begins before the currently playing track ends completely. The last note of a track is often very important and should not be muddled by the start of another track. A half a second of silence between tracks would be ideal.

As far as I remember it is JERIC's choice to keep tracks crossfading a little.
But it will be interesting to find out what SSTers think about it.

Personally I can live with current setup.

DrunkPiano: I have a feeling everyone on SST agrees with your opinion and request, so this won't fall on deaf ears ('scuse the pun). Wink

JERIC may want to weigh in on this but Molossus is correct: SAM (Streaming Audio Manager) has been programmed to crossfade a certain amount.
I think several years ago there was some discussion about this when JERIC was experimenting to find the optimal setting.
There are reasons why streaming stations crossfade tracks, and the current set-up seems to be least obtrusive.

*tries to find a polite way to phrase this.... FAILS* Wink

Ummm... I couldn't care less either way? Sorry...
I noticed the crossfading thing, but since I crossfade my own tracks at home, I can't say that it bothered me.
Then again, a half-second pause wouldn't disturb me greatly, either.
What I can't stand are looooong pauses between tracks, but I guess no one is really asking for a five-second break...

It is done to make it sound nicer. It has nothing to do with making it impossible to separate the songs nicely after ripping the streams. That is just a bonus.

I suggest you to add a poll to your idea, so we can have a better idea of who thinks it's good idea or not.

As for myself, I'm not sure about it. The crossfading doesn't bother me. Of course, you can miss the last note of a track but, for me, this last note is often interesting only when you listen to the whole score from the beginning to the end.

Off topic : I would love if, sometimes, we could just follow some tracks from the same score, but I know it is impossible. Back to topic.

The only interest I find in this idea is when there are too many short tracks in the queue. Sometimes, and most especially when there's a whole minute between what you see on screen and what you hear, you can be lost.

Last : the programmer have lots of work to do on this station, and I wouldn't want to give them more work.

So, it's a "no" for me.

Spoiler:
And this is certainly the longest post I ever write

Congratulations masked_platypus!

on topic
I was also thinking of making a poll when I read the original post, thanks m_p or already adding that comment.
Personally I think the crossfade is ok, it keeps the stream streaming.
But I really want to hear what others think about this.

I don't know if it will flow right with the pause. It seems that it's not as smooth unless it's crossfaded a little...

I like the crossfade. Sounds more like a radio station, and it's really not that long.

SST is unique. It's much better than a regular radio station, and SST listeners presumably appreciate music more than a teenager who flips on the radio to hear the latest pop tune. SST doesn't need the crossfade; SST is not a dance club that can't stand to have one single second of silence. Each track is a separate entity, a separate creative work, and should be treated as such. The artists would definitely appreciate not having their last note muddled by another song; I know I would if I were a composer.

Personally, I'm more a fan of a crossfade rather than an abrupt stop. That way, when 'The Painted Veil' transitions to 'Epicon', I don't get the bejeebies scared out of me. Smile

I do agree with you, but I'm also in the party line of "not that bothered by it." Sometimes it gets a little frustrating (though I think that has to do more with the university network), but for the most part, I don't mind.
