Anybody heard who is going to score Mel Gibson's Jesus movie "The Passion". Or is it even going to have music. Looks pretty wild. There are some clips on the web that look mighty fine. Just wondering.

I hit IMDB.com for that same question and it says James Horner. http://us.imdb.com/Credits?0335345 could be a good one or it could be another titantic. _________________ Grab a beer, don't cost nuttin... |

I would like to ask you something, if you saw the trailer. Is it true that this film won't be heard in English but in old jewish language, without subtitles? _________________ Thomas Newman is God(Excuse my English Im French) |

What?!?! Who the hell speaks Arameic these days outside of rabbis and other religios scholars and damned few of them at that? I think someone is pulling your leg when they told you that YuHira. Would be funny as hell though. _________________ A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day. - Calvin and Hobbes - |

I'm very serious... A lot of serious newspaper wrote this. It seems not to be a joke. It seems that Mel Gibson sympathises with traditionalists catholic associations. The movie is yet very criticized: and there are a lot of polemics about it, and because of the use of Arameic Language. _________________ Thomas Newman is God(Excuse my English Im French) |

This is on CNN.com "Filmed entirely in the dead languages of Aramaic and Latin, it has yet to secure a distributor. " I also read that there will be no subtitles. ugh! for the complete article check this out. http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movies/08/11/film.the.passion.ap/index.html _________________ Grab a beer, don't cost nuttin... |

Then who the hell cares who writes the score for the movie as it will never get distributed. If the movie is not going to be in a langage that the common masses understand and there are not going to be subtitles (even if there were most Americans would not care to be bothered to read them anyway) then the movie will not make ANY money and will never be distributed.

JK, I can't believe what a dumbass you came off as in that last post. Almost seems like you have something personal against the film.
Alright kids, since I'm one of the few here who reads the trade mags I'll tell you what I know. (And for any newcomers out there, I'm NOT a bible-beater, just a professional film maker.)
Yes, the film was shot entirely in Aramaic and Latin.
Some of you don't seem to grasp though that this is not a movie for the popcorn munching skater dudes. Will it tank? No. This film will pay for itself and make a profit. Plenty of religious people will see this movie, not to mention those who will buy or rent the video release.
JK, you come across as raving ignorant lunatic when you're going off that this movie will never be released, when at the same time I'm reading an article in Daily Variety that several distributors (including Miramax) are ready to start a bidding war for this film. Know what you're talking about before you rant.
Anyways, there's another thing going on about this film where some are saying it's anti-semitic. At first it seemed to be a big brujah, but at this point it's generally turning out that those who say it isn't have actually seen the film, while those who say it is haven't. The film has been shown to several important Judaic institutions who have vouched that it's not anti-semitic.
This is Mel Gibson's pet project. He funded and directed it through his own means. His idea was to go for realism. His hope is to create a film where it won't matter if you don't know the dialogue. (And having seen Oberammergau when I was in Germany, I personally don't think it does.)
Let's face it, this a film with an already built in audience who know the story word for word. (They study it every Sunday.)
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to see Bad Boys 2. |

Thank you Cocles for your post. I think almost as you, even if I didn't understand everything (I'm French and you used words I don't understand )
I agree with you, that this film in old language without subtitles is the the result of the will to be realistic. I think that Mel Gibson is very clever, courageous to make such a film. For this reason I think that I will watch this movie. And there will be no problem for translation!!!! _________________ Thomas Newman is God(Excuse my English Im French) |

The most awesome depiction of Christ though is still in "Ben Hur" when Hur is refused water as a slave.
When I saw it in a movie theater a few years ago, everyone in the audience began cheering at that scene. (And we're all a bunch of heathens here in LA. ) |

The whole thing reminds me ( sort of ) of the hysteria surrounding Scorsese's Jesus movie. Either it will be a good film or a flop. My money is riding on the good film option. Time will tell. I'll be going. Beats Charlie's Angels V or any Nicholas Cage film. Just my humble opinion obviously. I very much agree with the Ben Hur remarks as well.

I fully support Cocles post and just want to add that Mel Gibson has fully examined both sides of releasing the film with and without subtitles, and he knows what he is doing. This wouldn't be the first film that relied solely on images, not dialogue. You could even take the Pianist for instance. For 70% of the movie or more there is no dialogue, or none that is distinguishable. One is able to discern a story from images alone, and it might be even more potent without the subtitles. Anywho, I'm sure it will be a good film w/ or w/o the subtitles. _________________ "When you look into the eyes of a wolf you see into your soul. Hope you like what you see..." Aldo Leopold |
