i think everyone here is aware that many girls who appear to be on the net are actually guys trolling. warcraft and 2nd life have shown that. |

I wasn't trying to make a startlingly new observation, just sort of stating the obvious... again. 
It's just the one little fact that makes gender tags utterly useless, IMO.

I don't see why we would claim our gender with bells and whistles since, as it has been well pointed in several posts before, it could bring a lot of frustration and anger. This place is meant for people to relax and have fun together, while sharing a taste for music. How is this related to gender, if I'm allowed to ask? The nature of the interactions between us is more abstract than in the meatspace, anyway.
Take my nickname, for example. It sets me free from all the gender-related prejudices that most people carry in the luggage compartments of their minds. Most people assume that this nickname belongs to a male, though, and I guess that this comes from the same luggage compartment.

I'd rather leave it anonymous. A lot of people have mistakenly assumed I'm male at first, but the only time that offended me & I reacted strongly was when the comment suggested an idea of mine was "sensible" because I was male.
Now I'll admit I'm probably also a major offender the other way - I get an idea into my head as to whether a username is male or female, and they may have to correct me two or three times before I learn & remember. But for most people it doesn't seem to worry them - it's just corrected if it is germane to the chat at the time. |
