After checking out the loudness war:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RecordOfLoudnessWar

I moseyed over to an article declaring the end of the war - for mp3 listeners, anyways:
http://www.prorec.com/Articles/tabid/109/EntryId/343/Over-the-Limit-2-The-End-of-the-Loudness-War.aspx

And, being a user of Winamp, figured out how to use Replay Gain on my Winamp library:
http://blog.winamp.com/2009/08/24/automatic-volume-leveling-in-winamp-with-replay-gain/

Note: Apple users who want their own version can go here:

Thanks for all the information, ld80061, even if a lot of it hurt my ears more than over-pumped music did. I've never been one for the technical side of these things, and I will mourn CDs.

And thanks for the Mac link. Nice to know that my kind are not forgotten. I have iVolume, and it really does work as easily as the article says it does, though I don't think it's perfect. (What, in this world, is?) The price is steep, but they sometimes have coupons.
