I'm not surprised he won. "Up!" was really good, but I'm curious about Alexandre Desplat's "Fantastic Mr. Fox". Too bad he didn't win last year for "Benjamin Button". (Sorry for the little offtopic ^^)

Oh, and btw: CHRISTOPH WALTZ WON!!! Very Happy

Conratulations! He did great job as col. Landa. He was the only one worth watching in that movie.

I agree on that, molossus - he gave a great performance as "baddie"!

Have you seen Michael's acceptance speech at Oscars?
It was excellent! Smile

(Link to the video is there too)

Quote:
Thank you, guys. When I was... I was nine and I asked my dad, "Can I have your movie camera? That old, wind-up 8 millimeter camera that was in your drawer?" And he goes, "Sure, take it." And I took it and I started making movies with it and I started being as creative as I could, and never once in my life did my parents ever say, "What you're doing is a waste of time." Never. And I grew up, I had teachers, I had colleagues, I had people that I worked with all through my life who always told me what you're doing is not a waste of time. So that was normal to me that it was OK to do that. I know there are kids out there that don't have that support system so if you're out there and you're listening, listen to me: If you want to be creative, get out there and do it. It's not a waste of time. Do it. OK? Thank you. Thank you.

abclost has posted short interview with the cast and writers at the event listed above. They all have nice things to say about the music, and recognize how important is it/was to the success of the show.

Look for videos that start with "LOST Live"

here's an 8 min extract from the last scene from the last episode of lost, "the end".

Spoiler: Image in video is a spoiler
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nfloYaf9YQ

the 8 min finale track is a mash of flying high, life and death, no place like home, hurley's handout and oceanic 815. i will bet varese will do a 2 cd album for season 6.

I just read somewhere the Giacchino has been tagged to do the score for Let Me In, and English-language remake of the vampire movie Let the Right One In. My first instinct was to regard this as a departure for him, but then this thread reminded me that he has some horror, or at least tension, experience from scoring LOST. Now, if only I had a clear impression of that music. Anyway. News.

For a limited time (the next few days, certainly no later than Monday) you can listen to Giacchino's score for Cars 2 here:

Not sure if this is available outside the US.

There are some clips here from the recording sessions of the new star trek score. They are taken from the final credits which sound very similar to end credits from his last star trek score... Until clip three or four when a full blown choir kicks in.
Looking forward to the new score.

Quote:
It's a special brand of movie lover who is in the know about film composers. But even if you're not among these tuned in cinephiles, you can probably appreciate the special sneak peak into the world of Star Trek Into Darkness that WQXR offers in the form of music from composer Michael Giacchino's score. Host David Garland had Giacchino on his show "Music on the Radio," to delve into this sequel and its sensational score.

In the interview portion, Giacchino gamely shares with listeners how he researched for Star Trek into Darkness, what it was like on the set of the film, why he is in awe of Benedict Cumberbatch, and what inspirations he pulled from the original Star Trek series. You can listen to it all out below. Or if you just want to hear the music—including tracks titled "Pranking the Natives," and "An Ode to Harrison"--skip to roundabouts the 12-minute mark.

Giacchino is an acclaimed composer who won an Academy Award for his score of the Pixar adventure Up. He has previously collaborated with Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams on the 2009 reboot Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III, Super 8, and the Golden Globe-winning drama series Lost, which netted Giacchino two ASCAP Awards. With his celebrated skill for crafting dynamic scores, the American-born musician has become a hotly sought composer. Recently, he won headlines for signing on to score the Wachowski Sibling's next venture, Jupiter Ascending.
