Yep, we kind of keep an eye on all the launches here at work Smile

For X-37B eye-candy I just wanted to share this article with two stunning pictures of the X-37B being enclosed in the payload fairing of the Atlas 5 (make sure to take a look at the high-res versions)

Fleck! The launch of STS 134 has been pushed back to Mid Nov....
http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/schedule.html

It is confirmed... I will never get to see a single shuttle launch in person.

Story of my life.

Question: What is happening to this particular piece of debris? Is its orbit degrading and will it eventually burn up? Or does someone else have to worry about it hitting their satellite?

I didn't forget your question Two, it's just a bit hard to answer without the right tools Wink Anyway, as far as I can establish this piece of debris is decaying rather slowly, which makes sense if it's still in orbit after more than a year since the collision. This is just one piece of the enormous debris cloud that was created by that collision though, and that cloud has already led to several warnings for the ISS as well as the pieces get into lower and lower orbits.

Space Shuttle Atlantis launched today, and it was perfect. I didn't get to see it from the NASA causeway or the visitor complex (tickets got sold in minutes) but I went to Titusville and got a pretty good view from there, though I'd rather it be closer. Still got me some good photos of the launch, even from that distance

http://twitpic.com/1nu054

What surprised me about the launch was how much more intense and orange the rocket flame was compared to what we're used to seeing in photos and videos. It's just something you have to see yourself since it appears nothing can capture it quite like your own pair of eyes Smile

Unforgettable experience, I'm sure Chandler. Thanks for sharing with us!

The noise must be impressive too?

The noise wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped it would be. Still quite an experience, though Smile

I've started working through all the photos I took on my trip and have finished the photos from Kennedy Space Center and the launch itself. You can have a look here:

Chandler, it must have been a dream come true to see the launch! Awesome rocket pictures! I'm so jealous - I have to get to Florida one of these days.

With several lucky SSTers having seen shuttle launches recently, I decided to check out information about it.

I came across a terrific 29-minute documentary about the last night launch of Space Shuttle Endeavor, featuring crowd-sourced launch footage. It's the next best thing to being there or watching it live, I guess. The video is high quality. It's fascinating to hear the comments and opinions (both pro & con) from people in the crowd. But there is much more to it than that. See for yourself.
