For those who are interested (and judging by the way this thread has languished, maybe there aren't that many), two items of interest come to us via the nerds at aintitcool.com

First, a trailer for the movie version of Mama Mia
http://aintitcool.com/node/35045

And then, the one I care more about, the opening titles for Sweeney Todd:

There are clips for this movie out there somewhere, but I don't remember where, exactly. Oh, here:

I'll add another. This may sound odd, but "A Year With Frog and Toad" is awfully catchy even though its made for a younger audience. Very Happy

A new SSTer was in chat last weekend (and several times since) - nickname is Hulchris.
He lives and works in Greece, and was an assistant director on Mama Mia.
Here is his page on Imdb.

Wow..went all the way to page 5 before this showed up! Guess musicals aren't a popular theme here among members. Razz

Some of the modern stuff is ok. The Disney remake of Hairspray wasn't bad. Wicked is a unique take on the Wizard of Oz story. Disney's musicals of the 90s (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King) are very good and have character (was able to see LK on stage--the conductor loved her job!).

If I really had to choose--the older stuff is my thing. Find me a modern musical that can top Oklahoma, Music Man, Sound of Music, or King and I.

You forgot South Pacific, My Fair Lady, and West Side Story. Wink

SST has 5 of those 7!

Touche, twopop. I did forget a couple. I've never actually watched those shows (not even WSS) so I'm not so familiar with the songs. Will have to check those out! Smile

Of all of these, you should absolutely not miss West Side Story. The film's message and social commentary, and the music & lyrics* hold up beautifully even to this day. (*Check out "America" and "Gee, Officer Krupke" in the SST playlist.)

The opening credits sequence alone is "worth the price of admission". Watch at least that much. Those first few minutes are pure cinematic genius.

Hi, Kimberly. Welcome to the forums. I'm not sure I understand your question. Two was listing her favorite songs from West Side Story, though I respectfully disagree with the idea that it has held up that well. The opening number is good, though, I agree with that.

How convenient that this thread was brought back from the dead right when I'm getting into a fun new musical?

For all you Harry Potter fans out there (and those that aren't) you really should check out this fan made musical! It has all original dialogue and music and it is just totally awesome (direct quote right there Wink)

The production team StarKidPotter has both A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel set up in playlists on youtube.

Check it out!

Since my previous posts, I have heard and watched West Side Story. Sad story that takes place in about one day of time. I would agree the overture is worthy of paying for on its own.
