Living in chilling Norway my family felt the urge for a sunny vacation last year. I suggested Sicily.
Nobody had a better suggestion, so Sicily it was!
The date was set to the last week of September. Hopefully not too hot or crowded.

Here's a select few of the pictures I took.
Click on the pictures to see larger version.

View from hotel balcony. We stayed at a hotel called Baia di Ulisse.
It's really a spa restort, but we picked it because of the location and good reviews. (Overview in Google maps)

Agrigento was the closest city, only 10-15 minutes drive from the hotel.

A cosy trattoria/restaurant in one of Agrigento's side streets.

Agrigento shopping street by night. (You can take a virtual stroll here with Google Street View)

Situated below Agrigento is the Valley of the Temples (Valle dei templi), an archeological site with lots of temples,
catacombs and other architecture.
This is the Temple of Concordia (built by the Greeks in the 5th century BC)

From a different excursion to the old Greek colony Selinunte on the south-west coast of Sicily.
Picture was taken from the edge of the ancient city of Selinus, estimated to once have a population of over 20 000!
In the background the reconstructed Temple of Hera.

Looking up at a city called Enna in the middle of the island.
Took this picture just to show how most Sicilian villages are built on top of a hill or mountain.
Easily defendable and with a nice breeze to make the summer survivable.

Picture taken from Castello di Lombardia (Lombardy Castle) looking down at Enna.

Looking down at the town of Taormina on the east coast of the island.
In the top left corner you can barely make out mainland Italy.

This is the awesome scene from The Godfather Part I where Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is in hiding in Sicily.
He sits down for a drink with his bodyguards at a bar.
You can watch the scene on YouTube, unfortunately without subtitles.

(Basically, they talk about all the hot girls in the area, mentioning one in particular. It turns out the owner of the bar is her father.
Michael calls him back out, tells him who he is and that some people would pay a lot of money for that information.
He then tells the father it would be a shame for his daughter to lose a father - rather than gaining a husband.) Laughing Cool

This is what the place looks like today. The scene was recorded in the town of Savoca on the east cost of the island.
You can still buy refreshments there and a couple of rooms in the building serves as a small museum dedicated to the Godfather movie and the region itself.
Oh, and that's me enjoying a well deserved beverage for finding this place! Very Happy

This is the town of Giancaldo from the movie Cinema Paradiso.
The cinema is the building on the left and there's a fountain in the middle of the town square.

Giancaldo doesn't exist in real life, but this place does.
Many of the exterior scenes were shot in this town; Palazzo Adriano.
In the movie, Giancaldo is situated near the sea, but this place is actually far inlands and almost 700 meters above sea level, not far from Corleone.
The cinema building is gone (should have been behind the truck), but the fountain and everything else is still there!
Go for a virtual stroll in Google Street View

The fountain in the movie.

The fountain in real life. The water was excellent!

Scenery between Palazzo Adriano and Corleone.

Entering Corleone.
Me posing, and probably thinking "Just take the ******* picture so we can get back in the car with the AC!"

One of the streets of Corleone. It only takes three cars to make a traffic jam in Sicily!!!!

In Corleone we visited the anti mafia museum where we encountered the second person on the whole island to speak more than two words of english!
The guide was from Canada, so that doesn't count! Anyways, depicted is the only existing copy of the files from the 1986-87 maxiprocesso (maxi trial) where
almost 500 suspected mafiosi were put on trial in a bunker in Palermo.

That's it folks, hope you enjoyed Sicily as much as I did! Very Happy

This was not really not a vacation trip, but rather a family visit trip. But still I would like to share some of these photos. I'm not the best photographer either Wink
