If Brian Tyler, Klaus Badelt, John Powell, Jim Dooley, or James Newton Howard were among the choices i would have voted for one.

Dont get me wrong, the composers among the choices are all great and very talented, however, I wouldn't recognize them as my favorite.

Well, he's not asking who your favorite composer is.

He's asking who your favorite composer is who's already well known by the masses.

I would like to vote for Thomas Newman, but he is not in this list.

I'd say: Zimmer.

I would have liked to vote for Thomas Newman as well, but I settled for Williams. Newman has done a lot of new intersting work like American Beauty/Shawshank/etc., but his amount of work can't be matched w/ composers like Zimmer and Williams. At least, that's what the voices in my head tell me Idea

I voted for John Williams. But your list is missing Jerry Goldsmith and Alan Menken, as both are very well-known composers.

We're talking the masses here folks.

If you think every Tom, Dick and Harry knows who Alan Menken and Thomas Newman are, you're kidding yourself.

Especially when compared to the likes of Williams, Zimmer, and Elfman.

Shore is the composer of the week everyone knows right now thanks to LOTR.

Horner is in the same grey area right now I'd place Goldsmith and Silversti. People have heard of them, but they can't place what they've done.

*Deja-vu*

I agree on half of Trilobyte's comment. Goldsmith, yes - Menken, no.

Me three years ago: "Who is Elfman?"

I only knew Williams, Zimmer, Goldsmith and Horner

I am beginning to prefer Harry Gregson-Williams. I really like his stuff. At the moment Sinbad is me favourite soundtrack.

But let me repeat myself. I do not have a favourite composer. I have favourite soundtracks.

Menken is well known because of his nine Oscars and well-known Disney efforts. I agree he may not be the best composer, but the fact is even people who know nothing about soundtracks would know about him for the Disney efforts. Ditto for Randy Newman.

I don't agree with that, a few years ago, i knew and loved the disney themes and songs from mermaid to Beauty Beast. But i never heard of Alan Menken untill recently.
