Legendary british composer John Barry passed away at the age of 77 due to a heartattack this morning.
I once almost had the chance to see him in Vienna when he was supposed to attend the "Hollywood in Vienna" Concert 2009 at the Vienna Concert House (David Arnold, Harald Kloser, Bruce Broughton & Nicolas Dodd where there, including John Barry's daughter) to receive the Max Steiner Lifetime Achievement Award (on a side note: 2010 it was given to Howard Shore who also conducted a passage of his Lord of the Rings-score).
But sadly at that time his wife got sick and he had to stay in the US and David Arnold received the award on his behalf.
(At the press conference for this event some weeks in advance - it was held via Skype, we sat in Vienna and he in New York - I had a chance to ask him about his opinion of the current situation in the filmmusic business regarding the current quality output. He replied that the "golden days" are gone and for now he doesn't see a trend that would bring them back...)
I'm sad to see him gone, but also I regrettably have to admit that I'm not that fully surprised about his passing.
May he rest in peace, and condolences to his family and friends! _________________ If our music survives, which I have no doubt it will,

I almost saw him in Ghent last year, but he was already to sick to come to Belgium to do the concert.
Would have been my only chance to see him perform....
And I'm also not that surprised by his passing but still it comes as a shock to me...
May he indeed rest in peace, and condolences to his entire family and all of his friends! _________________ "True friendship is sitting together in silence and feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had."

What a sad news it is. A big giant leaves this world, but his music hopefully stays with us.
I'd once the opportunity to see a concert from his music, with him conducting. I just now realize how lucky I am.
Condolences to his family and friends _________________ There is no problem that can't be solve without any solution |

Even his death made the worldwide news, and that's quite a feat with all the ruin in Egypt currently.
Whenever I'll watch Dances With Wolves or Zulu again, I'll be reminded of that awesome concert in Ghent. He left his legacy to all the movie fans and soundtrack fans around the world for an eternity to come. It'll be a long time before his mastery of composing dramatic music is matched.
Good night, John Barry, and rest well. _________________ Music is not just made of sounds. It is also made of silence. |

Thanks for posting, bp. A sad day, indeed.
He will be missed, even as his music lives on!...

This was certainly sad news. I like a lot of Barry's music...the Bond series, the romantic themes...how can you replace one who can write music like this? |
