String Quartet
2009
UK

Official: Escala

This electric string quartet appeared on Britain's Got Talent and came in 2nd place. This is their debut album and it contains mostly covers from classic film soundtracks that we know and love. I find it has a very powerful, contemporary sound and I really enjoyed their little variations on the themes.

It would be a worthy addition to SST in my opinion. You can hear the full songs on Escala's official website.

Any specific reason NanM? Have you listened to the samples on their site? It's good stuff.

I only heard six of the samples from the site, which were only the music pieces I already knew of listening in their original versions.
Based on that I would say there's nothing new here that hasn't been done before in terms of instrumentation (punching popular tunes on made stringed instruments punctuated by few or heavy electronic elements), that were performed by other groups (Bond) and single artists (Vanessa Mae).

Although the source material are treated with respect, it didn't add anything substancial to the original pieces. That doesn't mean that I don't like these kind of recordings, but they need to add a distinctive particular arrangement of the originals (I'm thinking right now the Yo-Yo Ma cello perfomances of Morricone, or the Pink Floyd Symphony, as examples).
