What we can hear in "1917" is far from the creative, authorial work of the composer. It resembles more faithful following the tempo track, with only minor flashes of his own involvement in the project. Paradoxically, this does not have a very negative impact on the image itself. Although the musical illustration fills the film tightly, it is rarely put in the foreground. We will surely appreciate its action in the initial scenes, when the main plot of the plot is being tied up. And so the presentation of the main theme takes place when the main characters are presented to us. When we get to know their future mission with them, the soundtrack starts to gain pace. Rhythmic drums with electronic samples integrated into the background effectively build up the tension. The same as the ambient background that accompanies Blake and Schofield as they break through the deadly battlefield. And so much for climate building. The rest of the film stands for either duplicating this content or clogging up empty spaces with uniform, ambient wallpaper.
Of course, there are moments that break out of this craftsmanship. And such moments throw the viewer away, from indiscriminate admiration to irritation. Let's start with what fascinated me the most in the musical setting of "1917" and what in a way saves the image of this work. Namely, the ingeniously illustrated scene of the night crossing of the Écoust-Saint-Mein, where a rising, raised melody beautifully adorns the flare-lit city ruins. So much for creativity, because when we get to the key scene - then the curtain of unwittingly following the guidelines of the director and producers falls. Thomas Newman does not even try to mask what is a source of inspiration.
