Hello Virginians, and others!
Yes, XMMS is open source, and I run it under Linux. I've managed to escape from the giant of Redmond. (Blaster worm? What's that?) The few minutes I've been able to look into the issue have not provided a way to use mp3PRO for me at this point.
Still can't complain, though. I still enjoy SST, as I have from almost the beginning. The music still sounds
as good as it always has (except for
those times when demand exceeded
supply...this site is just too darn
popular sometimes...)
If there are any other Unix/Linux types lurking about with some suggestions,
please let me know.

No mp3PRO support that I've found for XMMS.
Noticed this in your sig:
- MSN/ICQ : ask for it
If you're looking for a way to do both,
try http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
Also does AIM, Y!, Jabber, and a host of others.

Naah trillian works for me here ;-)
I only use linux now mainly for it services, like smb and apache. Not the applications.
But if I would use linux application, I would indeed use gaim. |

Having read all of that I am one of the few that will definatly mourn the loss of OGG. I was gone for a few days and when I came back... <sigh> I guess that is the breaks.
I would rather support the open source guys than the closed source "give us royalties" guys, but that is just my opinion. SS is good enough that I will listen regardless, but (if one person's opinion ever counts) I would greatly appreciate it if OGG were brought back.
BTW Cocles: You said you were the one that paid for it last time, may I ask how much? Please forgive me if you do not wish to answer. |

I think we plunked down somewhere between $20-$35 for Ogg. We didn't have very many Ogg streams so the price wasn't a problem.
Like I said, we got rid of Ogg because virtually no one used it. It's wasn't worth the upload bandwidth from Jeric's server nor the time it took trying to teach people what it was and how to use it. |

Actually I think one of the existing streams does not deliver the track name (the Live365 one). I switched to the other 64k stream and it came in fine.
I didn't realize I didn't have the mp3pro plugin installed at first until a very dear friend pointed it out. When he showed me where to go and how to enable it (it's been a while since I installed WinAMP mods and all, after all...), I waited until the server was up again and BOOM!
The difference in mp3 and mp3pro quality is astounding. I can't believe my ears right now...it sounds great! I can't tell if pro 64k is worse or better than mp3 128k (ya know, this DOES sound a bit like older debates, hehe) but I know that if there was a 128k server running I'd never want to pull away from my earphones or speakers again!

I got a private message that told me how to enable the title for XMMS. Thought I'd include it here for all to share:

I read your message about XMMS and ogg in the forum. So, if you want to enable the title with XMMS, just go to "preferences", and in "audio i/o plugins" go in "mp3 player" and then on "streaming" tab. There, in the bottom of the page, you'll find an option regarding title streaming. Use it, and you'll have title with XMMS. Bye!

I'm also one of the XMMS fans out there...
(The SST Theme for Winamp works perfectly too )
However, Live365 keeps buffering for me, and the titles
don't show up, so I'll stick to mediacast.
MP3PRO support probably won't show up for XMMS until somebody
wants to pay the $90,000 licensing fee to create a closed-source
plugin for an open-source platform. I'd like to see it happen, but
have fun with the fund-raising...
Thus, I'd prefer the ogg stream.
WinAmp 5, XMMS, and QuintEssential all have support for Ogg.
RealNetowkrs just gave a grant to imporve Ogg Vorbis for it's
Helix Platform (which RealOne Player v2 and newer are based off of)
Player support is not a problem. There is only the need to educate the people. |
