So my 5yr old keeps pestering me to let her watch Harry Potter, as most of the kids in her class have already seen it, but I think it's way to scary.

She watches Scooby-doo and would watch Nightmare before Christmas everyday if we would let her. But she was terrified of the goblins in Labarynth, and was wouldn't sleep for a week after seeing the Jason/Nike comercial from the olympics a few years ago.

So who's got an opinion.

Well the goblins in Labrynth can be creepy.... man, that movie ruled.

If she's read the book (or had it read to her), I'd say go for it and let her see. She already knows what to expect, so yeehaw.

This is what my sisters did to me when I was young. Well the youngest of the three anyways... She locked my in our newly finished basement and played Nightmare on Elm Street. The scene where the girl is first killed by freddy was on Shocked ... After that not much ever scared me. Confused

But prior to that, those goblins did freak me out, right at the begining where they steal Toby. And the guys who's heads come off.... But Harry potter shouldn't scare her. Just watch with her and let her know the good guys win... Or locke her in a basement for just a bit. Wink

If kids want to watch Harry Potter movies then the best suggestion would be to have an adult watch the movie with them just to reassure them of the scary bits like the giant spiders in The Chamber of Secrets! Very Happy

Ok I forgot the follow up.

"Emily is that troll a little scary?"

"Dad, don't you know trolls aren't real they only make them up to scare people"

...

"Em, where you scared when the monster came out of the back of that man's head?"

"Daddy, you can't have two faces on your head, that just pretend stuff for your imagination"

"Dad where did they get the unicorns blood, and how come it's black, you told me everybody's blood is red, and how come the bad man was drinking it, you tell me to wash out a cut when it bleeds, can I taste my blood next time I get a cut, hey if i don't wash out my cut will it turn black like the unicorns blood..."

It's in the forest and it's night time, but it was black to me. It was however highly reflective or irradescant. Additionally it was also very viscous about the thickness of blackstrap molases (which tastes absolutely nasty IMHO). Since we've given it so much thought, how big/strong would a unicorn's heart have to be to pump that goop around? I suppose you could always explain it away by saying it's magic.

The first one, no problem. My GF's 6 year old had no issues with it when it came out.

The second one's a lot darker, though - I'd let that one wait until she's, say, 7, but that's me.

I have suffered young children in Harry Potter movies, the problem is not that they are creepy, that they are, the problem is the length. Disney studios are the best because they know their customers, I mean, their movies, specially those targeted specifically for children are barely over 80' long. That's the time a <9 yo can sit without starting to get frantic, Harry Potter with its three hours (both of them) drives the children crazy which makes the theater a mayhem.

My idea is that children under 10 shouldn't watch these movies for this reason.
