I thought this would be appropriate to post here in lieu of the general section of the forum.
Over the past few weeks I have noted a distorted sounding stream whenever a particular song hit a spot where there is very little sound or none at all (a brief moment of silence within the song). Today I discovered why and wanted to share with the community what I did to resolve it.
I am currently listening to Streaming Soundtracks using WinAmp 5. Whether I am listening to the Live365 stream or the WinAmp stream I get the same results, so it's not specific to a particular stream. When you are using the volume control on WinAmp 5, the lower the volume setting, the more likely you will hear this distorted or scratchy or broken up (or whatever you want to call it) sound. To illustrate, try sliding the sound control to less than 10%; you can try turning up the sound elsewhere (I have my regular output turned up, and have a sliding volume control on my headset). You may hear the distorted sound I am speaking of (but again, only when the passage is soft or non-existant, and you know the stream is still flowing).
To resolve this, I have turned the volume control on WinAmp 5 all the way up to 100%, and am adjusting the volume on another control (in this case, the sliding control on my headset). The result is a significant reduction or absence of the distorted sound I am experiencing.
Also note I have downloaded and have installed the THOMSON mp3pro decoder, the only thing different in the WinAmp 5 setup.
I don't know if this will happen with other computers, but if anyone else experiences this, give this solution a try.

I don't know if this were Kossian's problem above, but anyway.
You should normally always have your soundcard send out a good strong sound signal by leaving the soundvolumes in Windows PlayControl (or whatevere it's called at your system) at or near their default values (80%-90%). If the soundsignal from the PC is to weak, you would hear much more electronic interference/noise when you turn up the volume on your speakers/headphones.
I don't notice any difference in sound quality when I change the volume in Winamp, when the volume slider settings "Play Control" and "Wave/DirectSound" are at their default levels in Windows.
Here are some other general things that can help make the quality of the stream better, for those of you who haven't already done it.
Open the Preferences menu in Winamp (CTRL+P). Go to Plug-ins, click on Output and dobbelt click on DirectSound output.
Check that "Create primary buffer" is checked, under the "Device" tab. It fixes some sound distortion problems.
Enable "Allow hardware acceleration" if your card supports it.
The buffer size can be changed under the "Buffering" tab. Increase the Buffer/Prebuffer length to get better skipping protection.
Check "Enable CPU usage control" to lower the CPU usage.
There is also some good info about the quality of the stream under the "Status" tab. |
