|
James Horner has the ability to compose some beautiful melodies, but he does like to quote his own music. I was asked to come up with some concrete examples. Any other examples you can think of?
Bicentennial Man recycles the chords and piano theme that later shows up in Beautiful Mind. I think an earlier version of this theme was in Sneakers.
Bicentennial Man Track 1 2:53
Beautiful Mind Track 1 0:50
Ascending note trademark, in different keys:
Aliens Track 2 0:38
Star Trek 2 Track 8 0:50 |

I wouldn't call it "quoting his own music" but simply ripping off because he's a lazy bastard...
Aliens rips off:
Star Trek 2
Ballet Suite Gayaneh (by Aram Khachaturyan)
The Mask of Zorro rips off:
Aliens
Patriot Games rips off:
Aliens
And I really hate this damn shakuhachi/pan-flute kind of instrument he always uses.

why do you folks always pick on Horner
and I like those flutes.
I've been here only a few months so I never listened to such a broad array of ST's before.
Since we're playing the "self-quotations" game
I can find plenty of soundtrack clips from Zimmer or Williams that repeat or sound extremely similar. For example, hear any similarities between Home Alone and Harry Potter and Hook ? or Zimmer, Crimson Tide and Gladiator come to mind. Also the way he uses the electric guitar is extremly recognizable, but I like it.
I'm a fan of Horner, Zimmer and Williams. I highly respect those individuals. So by no means would I ever bash them or any other composer, there are those better than the others but by no means is appropriate to bash.
edit:
std's = st's

Techo, I'm not really 'bashing' Horner. The Horner fan sites do the same thing in their forums, pointing out where he likes to repeat himself. I really like Legends of the Fall, Glory, Spitfire Grill, Dad, etc. I started this topic because I didn't want to mix it into another thread debate, but hoped it would spark some conversation. |

Well it worked you do have some interesting observations. About the bashing part, I wasn't particularly replying to your post but Shock's.

Well, when calling Horner a "lazy bastard" for using some cues and motifs from his older scores over and over again, I may have come off a bit harsh...
Considering the fact that a composer usually only has 1 - 4 weeks with locked picture to compose a 90 minutes-something score, it is perfectly understandable that sometimes he has to re-use old material to match the deadline. |

Yeah, with such tight deadlines, even the best composers can't always reinvent their music for every film. And the big guns are often composing more than one film a year.
But I hear Horner, Williams, etc., having personal styles that run through all their scores. Not necessarily ripping themselves off. Just like you don't hear Metallica start to compose lounge music, they have a basic sound that's expected of them. Granted, film composers have a bit more freedom... _________________ http://www.keith-moore.net
