"The Watchers of the Apocalypse" from Robert Lundum or "The Road to Omaha" from the same author.
Two books I read from him and where I could not let down, the first one always making you wonder what would happen and the second being fun as hell and well written.
Also check Tom Clancy. He is quite technical but he writes very good books.

When I get tired of Fantasy/Sci-Fi, I pick a classic like Tolstoy, Chaucer, Dumas... that will set me right back to leisure reading in a hurry!
I'd recommend one of those, if you need a break from the fun stuff.

October Sky is a great book, as well as Pride and Prejudice. Seabiscuit is wonderful as well. I heard The Da Vinci Code is a good one too, but I havent read it, sane with Big Fish. Thats about all I have for now. Just don't be tempted to pick up The Shipping News. I was in a bookstore today, there are lots of options, just walk around. I'm sure you'll find something worth reading. |

Here are a couple suggestions for you:1. The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough - a saga of three generations of a family in the Australian Outback. 2. Any book by Wilbur Smith. 3. Any Dirk Pitt Novel by Clive Cussler - you get it all: action, suspense, mystery,..

If you're interested in the American school system, you can read "Savage Inequalities" by Jonathan Kozol. The author advocates increasing funding to the U.S. school system by changing how schools here are funded. He focuses only on New York public schools, which is a skewed view since not all school districts are in the big cities and have such disparities, plus I don't think funding alone can improve education, but it certainly helps!
A fun nonfiction read is "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT students who took Vegas for Millions" by Ben Mezrich.
Best fiction book I've read recently is "House of Sand and Fog" by Andre Dubus III.
Lately I've been reading a lot of U.S. political books which might not interest you since you're in the UK. I enjoyed reading "The Bushes: Portrait of a Dynasty" by Peter and Rochelle Schweizer. It's a pretty straightforward biography of the family, although it's slightly pro-Bush.

When I am not reading sci fi, I like to read Charles de Lint (a good Ottawa boy) books. They have all been good so far but my favorite is Moon's Heart
Not really sure how to describe it. Maybe Urban Folk. His novels usually take place in a city and mix in mystical things like Satyrs, pixies, yada yada.

"Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ" by Daniel Goleman. It will totally change how you look at yourself and other people.
"Hot Zone" by Richard Preston was a fun, fast and disturbing read.
"Mount Vernon Love Story" by Mary Higgins Clark. I don't know what possessed me to pick this up in the airport, but I did and thoroughly enjoyed it. A very interesting perspective on George Washington. |

Uh... :: thinks :: Oh, I just read this for school, which means you probably have too. To Kill a Mockinbird by Lee Harvey. I mostly read scifi unless its for school. So I dunno.
